Choosing a new headphone

Hi,

I have actually an ath-a900 and i want to buy a new one.

I need an open headphone (greatly hear outside sounds), with good bass (i like bassy headphone), also good for games/movies/skype that can stay 5+ hour without fatigue and hurt eardrum for 500$ max (300$ better :p).

I've just buy and tested the dt990 premium 250 ohms but i don't like it. I don't like the too low medium and too high/bright treble.

I think the Dolby headphone 7.1 mode is a little too bad on the dt990, so i need an headphone with a good render with dolby headphone and with medium quality source like mp3 ogg...

So if someone can help me that will be nice :p i've past two days in google to search but never find better than this a900 with 500$ max.

Heya,

What kind of sound are you looking for since you didn't like the DT990? Considered just getting the AD900? Do you want something less bassy? More bassy? Neutral? Do you have a good DAC/AMP already? Or is this from a sound card? Tell us what hardware you have, if any. Try and describe what you're looking for.

Very best,

Second hand Sennheiser HD650, it appears you do not like extended treble.

Buy a headphone amplifier with the left over money ~ Fiio E9.

Hi :p

I have a soundcard Xonar Essence ST but i hesitate to buy a DAC or a MixAmp because my soundcard cause my pc bluescreen (can't see it he just total freeze but i need to reset my computer) sometimes when i change headphone or when i touch it a little from inside and my sound freeze (without bluescreen) sometimes too.

What is better in term of sound quality, the Essence ST or a DAC / MixAmp?

I love bass and medium but dont like too bright treble (like the dt990) who hurt eardrum.

I love bass and treble but dont like too much high-pitched (i like it but not too "bright" like the dt990) who hurt eardrum.

A really good way of fixing that blue screen crash is by removing the card

from the computer and using something like the Audio GD NFB5 instead - it's a

very powerful all in one amplifier with a built in DAC. Computer connects

to the NFB5 by USB cable to get an audio signal.

It will drive just about any headphone you can think of, HD650 included.

They sell for about $350 or so depending on where you look

After testing again the dt990, i like it a little more than my ath-a900 (forced to reduce the treble in the EQ but still hurt my ears) i found the sound is more "living" but i don't think it worth its price, i prefer buy an headphone who cost 100$ more but with a huge difference in term of sound quality compare to my actual ath-a900.

Sorry to hear about the problems with the Essence ST :(

What operating system are you using (which version of windows)?

Some ideas that might help.

Go into the BIOS, disable any ports you do not use, like serial or parallel ports.

Disable on board sound.

Turn computer off, remove and reseat Essence ST card, or even move to different PCI slot.

Total remove Asus Xonar drivers and reinstall with latest version.

The Essence ST should be a better sound then the Astro Mix-amp.

You can upgrade the 3 op-amps (operational amplifiers) on the Essence ST for $15 to $30

Heya,

None of the AKG's are going to satisfy your bass needs.

The HD650 calls you. You'd probably love it. It's very dark and moody, smooth to listen to, no fatigue from treble, and it's a little more bassy than a flat neutral headphone, so it has what you're after.

Very best,

I do not expect that turning off unused ports will help much, it's more of a long shot.

But making sure the card is well seated, might help more.

Download the latest set of drivers for the Xonar Essence, this is a usual culprit. Disable the onboard sound (usually Realtek) in Control Panel to avoid

any conflicts.
