Need help picking headphone

I have been looking for some good quality headphones that will sound good with different kinds of music. I like to listen to some metal, rock, dubstep, and most other sorts of music. I saw the beyerdynamic headphones and they looked pretty good. I am not sure which one to get, or whether there is another headphone that is better at the same price range. The beyer dt880 looked like the safest option for different kinds of music. People said that the dt990 needed a lot of fiddeling with an EQ and stuff, or a really expensive amp, to sound good. The dt770 is supposed to have strong bass, but I think the dt880 would have better quality as it isn't closed. Then I have the problem of what impedance. Do you think that the 600ohm headphones would sound better if I can only really afford a cheap amp at the moment such as a fiio e7/e9 combo, or would the 250ohm sound better? If you could give me some suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Heya,

For your genres, I'd probably go DT770. Get the PRO version (80ohm) and a simple Fiio E7 will be the only other thing you need. Then, it's also portable and isolated. Good setup.

Very best,

Yea, Beyerdynamic DT-770 80-Ohm, nice sound, full bass, should work with just about any headphone amplifier.

I heard that the bass on the 880 would sound more clear than the 770 and that the mids are recessed on the 770, but I haven't heard them. What do you think?

Regarding the sound quality, you will only know for sure when actually listening, so it is best if you can audition at least one, or have the option of returning whichever one you choose if you do not like it. The 880 has a flatter response, and is technically better in that respect (at the cost of lacking isolation, and being more expensive); however, you could find that you prefer the more U-shaped frequency response of the others.

On the impedances and amplifiers: both the E7 (as a portable amplifier) and E9 should be OK for 250 Ohms (with slightly more than 2Vrms and 7Vrms maximum output, respectively; the latter can even produce more power than what the headphones can handle if you are not careful). For the 600 Ohm versions, which sound slightly better than the 250 Ohm ones, the E9 is still enough; perhaps the E7 alone would be problematic, but if you do not need more than about 100 dB maximum SPL, it may still be acceptable for portable use.

It would be nice if MalVeauX said why he thought the dt770 would be better than the 880 for those genres. I haven't heard any of them, I don't think there are any decent shops where I could try any where I live (Canberra, in Australia). I am buying them from amazon because I could only see them in a couple Australian online stores for twice as much. If I don't like them too much I will probably have to sell them, but I don't think that will be too much of a hassle seeing as they sell for like $400+ in Australian stores.  Another thing no-body said was why 80 Ohm pro 770s instead of the 600 ohm. If I was to go with the 770s are these the good 80 ohm version: http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-Pro-80-Closed-Studio-Headphones/dp/B0016MNAAI/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top . I really appreciate your help, Its really hard to pick which is the best without having any audiophile friends with all of them to listen to lol. One thing that particularly bugs me with my current headphones (****ty) is that they sound crappy and rattle at high volumes. will this be a problem with these? I have seen a LOT of threads with people saying that the dt880 600ohm are the best in the range so I am really hung on which ones to get.

The real issue with any 600ohm Beyer Dynamic will be the massive amount

of amplification they will need to sound their best.

The 80ohm DT770's are popular because they're the bassiest version and

are reasonably easy to drive from a full sized iPod or decent sound card.

Oh and the DT880's are semi-open, they still leak outside noise.

Given your dub step and rock intentions - I think you'll do no wrong with the DT770.

Are they like the other models like the 880 and 990 where the lower impedences are much ****tier. In this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbyuSFyYOVs comparison of the 880s the guy said don't even bother buying the 32 ohm because the sound is bad. I like to listen to dubstep like nero so the bass would be a benefit, but will they sound good with rock and metal music too?

I like them with rock, I find kick drums have decent impact and separation is reasonable for a closed can.

The one to get is definitely the 80ohm over the 250 ~ have not heard the 880/990 in 32ohm versions.

I think Beyerdynamic came out with the 32-Ohm version to try to sell headphones to people who do not or would not own a headphone amplifier.

Beyerdynamic 32-Ohm headphones have the least amount of bass of all the models.

Also Beyerdynamic Premium models cost more the pro models.

Pros have tighter seal around the ears, the Premiums are a little more comfortable.

Heya,

The DT880 is all about neutrality and detail, it's quite an analytical headphone. Not something I would consider for things like Rock and Dubstep for example. But the DT770 is more fun, it's more bassy, less analytical, and more like what you'd hear at a concert for these music types. So, I suggested that one for those reasons. Also, didn't suggest 600ohm because there's no point in it, the 80ohm is easier to drive, and they all sound way too similar to justify one or the other, so I would get the less expensive one, which is the PRO 80.

Very best,

The DT-770 Pro 80-Ohm has more bass then the 250-Ohm

The 250-Ohm is more balanced sound, my favorite headphones.
