The next step from Denon AH-D2000?

Good evening Head-fi!

I have currently a pair of Denon d2000, and I'm looking to upgrade. I have a fairly powerfull amp (Argon HA2, a hybrid), but that would maybe be the next upgrade after new headphones.

I like the sound in the denons, they were my first "audiophile" headphones and opened up my eyes to the world of headphones. But now I am thinking of upgrading.

I am not a basshead, but I like a "warmer" sound.

I mainly listen to progressive rock/metal (like Dream Theater, Ayreon, Opeth etc.), but are also fan of well recorded studio albums of other genre (like jazz and instrumental).

My budget is around 600-700usd, and it is not important if they are open or closed.

If you have some recommendations, please post them :)

PS. I've created a own thread for this because I thought it might help others too.

Sounds like some used LCD-2's are a good option. I dig the overall D2k sound sig, too, and that's where I went after mine. Powerful amp is a plus, too.

Sennheiser HD600/650 + tube amp?

Get a used LCD-2?

Thank you for answers! Looks like I'm ending on one of these 3: Denon 7000, Hifiman HE500 or used LCD2.

Read a ton on these already, but don't know if my amp can drive the LCD2 properly. And I've read that HE500 isn't suitable for rock/metal, but this is still uncertain for me.

What do you guys think about the HE500 vs d7000, for progressive rock/metal?

Heya,

HE-500.

I don't think the D7000 even compares honestly to the HE-500. They're such different headphones, it's not even in the same section. They're too different. And everything about the HE-500 is excellent, it's such a naturally good sounding headphone, and it's very warm and you'll love it.

Very best,

This!

If you don't mind a brighter headphone, you might want to try an RS1. Nothing does electric guitar, or really string in general, like an RS1. Warm and smooth, but with a nice crunchy bite when it is required.

Thank you all for great answers! I definitively like more warmer headphones than brighter (from what I so far tried).

Wow, that's some statement there biggrin.gif And it's only 100$ more. I've read that they are pretty hard to drive though, but my amp should be decent enough. Might just end up on one of the HE500s.

But still, I want to know every option before I decide. Think the search button hates me by now...

Bright and warm aren't mutually exclusive though.

I would say they are, at least confusing. Perhaps warm with great extension would better describe an RS1.

Edit: Or typical hot Grado treble.

I dunno. I generally associate warmth with a slight midrange or lower bloating in a pleasantly analogue kind of way. Euphoric also works there, I think. I've heard and liked a great number of headphones that have that midrange warmth (ATH woodies sometimes do) but also have a bright upper end.

The more I am reading about the HE500, the more I feel it suits my needs. I may put in an order on them after Christmas, maybe look into a audio gd amp as well.

Hmmm... Scary how fast I feel like audio equipment no longer is expensive... Need to control my wallet rolleyes.gif

Once you buy one high-end... oh lord... the flood gates open on everything.

Advice: Get the HE-500 and a suitable DAC/AMP and erase all knowledge of this place.

Very best,
