MONITORING Headphones for Electronic Music.

Hi.

I'm looking for monitoring headphone.

I need something that has no colorization in the sound.

Also I want to know the difference between open and closed.

Which headphone do you guys prefer?

Since I make EDM tracks I need something that can reach 5-10 Hz frequency range.

I'm thinking about getting KRK KNS8400 (b/c of such a good review from this forum)

but I'm not too sure if its good for EDM.

Welcome to headfi...for mixing and mastering I prefer the K702, but you'll need some hps amp to drive the K-702 to the top. If you're not going to use hps amp, you can try the GMP 8.35, or the M-50 a little more boomy and not as flat as the GMP's. You'll need to check out hps around 35 ohm.

AKG generally makes some of the best monitoring headphones, though I'd suggest the closed-back 271. It's also easier to drive than the 702.

"Monitoring headphones" used to actually mean something definite; today many companies use the term simply for marketing purposes.

Nothing yet exists in the way of headphones that has no colorization to the sound.

But there are headphones with less color, and those with more color.

Ultimately, you'll end up with the "color" you like the most.

Briefly -

Closed headphones are more familiar to most people, the outer side of the earpieces are solid preventing sound from

getting out or in.  (Pretty much - no headphone isolates 100%.)

Open headphones don't have this solid outer barrier.  So sound travels freely in and out.

Those around you can hear what you're listening to.  And you can hear everything that's

going on around you through the earpieces.

But generally, open headphones convey more of a sense of expansiveness to the sound;

a wider and deeper soundstage.

About the 5-10 Hz... there is no musical information there to work with mostly air. Better to start roll-off from around 20-to-30Hz depending on the track.

Also depends on how much you're wanting to spend?  A true "monitoring" pair of headphones with a really flat frequency response can be pretty expensive.

where do you live? if you live in the states i would try to hit up a guitar center and audition some pairs for you. they have the KRK's there your asking about and many others as well. you don't have to buy it there unless they do you a favor and match the price on an online retail site. they usually have no problem matching prices for you.
