WTB AND WANT TO KNOW

Thread Starter

I have a pair of HE500s.

i have nothing else. So need an AMP, DAC and DIGITAL IN.

money is no problem as long as its less than 1300.

New is ok, but new but used is preferred.

RECOMMENDATIONS.? FS OFFERS?

Two things. I know the schiit lyr/dac is a great combo...and maybe the dac is good but I DON'T WANT TUBES IF POSSIBLE....the schiits non-tube options might be OK but I read they can run hot (not the worst problem but...) and that one amp was prone to have a pronounced hum (unless they fixed that).

Thats all. Suggestions? Offers? I'm CONUS and eager to get a rig in place.

...oh, anyone think a used peach tree all in one would be a good approach...such as an inova? Didn't know if that's powerful enough for the 500s

TIA.

If ~$1300 is what you have, you are in a great place to start, I think.  Your location isn't posted.  If you are near some major cities, you should look into going to a meet.  Bring your cans with you, and try out other people's equipment.  At any given meet, even a small one, you can listen to very different pieces of equipment, and people are almost always very willing to let you plug in your own cans to try things out.  Heck, many people are perfectly willing to have you play some of your own music through their sources so that you can hear what you are already familiar with.

I wish I followed that advice when I started off.  There is a good chance that there were some purchases I made in the past that I might not have otherwise if I was able to hear many different pieces of equipment all at once before I purchased something.

Where are you located?

Violectric.

Either V90 or V100 model, they offer up over 1200+mW at the 38ohm impedance of the He-500, stellar

German made amplifers ~ so powerful that you can run 2 x He-500's at the same time through the

dual headphone outs.

yes, I was looking at the V200 as I've only read good thinkings on the company - but maybe I don't need that much... I thought so and thought (esp. on promo) the NFB-10SE would be good. I was thinking of going with the Ipure or Cambridge id-100 as input (again, running iPod apple lossless - not mp3s) as source (maybe a laptop source once and awhile for kicks).

I'm surprised to hear the V90 or V100 can run the 500s well? I've read others saying it was too little. If this is the case, it's good new for the wallet.

Also, thanks on the go to a "meet" suggestion. I'm in the east bay so I should be able to find something nice in SF or the surrounding area.

Other opinions?

This may sound absolutely silly to most, but first try a cheap TA2050 based chip amp for your ortho's. I've bought a Topping TP22 and it's an excellent headphone amp, even though it's made for speakers. Mike at Headfonia seems to like it too: http://www.headfonia.com/hifimediy-tk2050-amplifier/

This way you can first hear a decent amp and your HE500 potential before you shell out for the big ones. :) This will give you more reference later on and help you decide.

I can't help you out with finding a DAC. Any well-built DAC sounds the same to me. wink_face.gif popcorn.gif
