Hi i'm wondering if there is any way to hook up a powered sub to my computer without using a receiver. I read a lot of people recommending active bookshelf speakers over standard 2.1 pc speakers. My motherboard has ports for 5.1 audio. Could I use a 3.5mm to rca converter and plug it into the center/subwoofer channel of the motherboard?

Yes. A question is volume control. If the board software has no volume control you'll need to use a preamp, AFAIK. Highly recommend the "Zero" mini unit sold on fleabay and reviewed here extensively. $120, clean, includes decent DAC and headphone amp to boot!
