Skype and Audio

I've disabled my onboard sound card via the BIOS and am running the Fiio E9/E7 combo. My rellies want me to use Skype so that we can talk back and forth. If I get a headset what do I need to do? Do I need to re-enable the onboard card and just plug the headset into the appropriate sockets or can I do this via the E9. I want to maintain the excellent sound that I've currently got and don't want to have to enable and then disable the onboard card just to use Skype. As  I said, I can see and hear my rellies but how do I make sure they can hear me?

The E9 has a line in, so you might be able to get a mic that will plug into it. I'm not sure if it would need some kind of amp or something, though.

Or maybe you could get a USB mic.

USB headset sounds good - where would I connect it?

Good point but if I have the onboard sound disabled will it work? I was wondering if I could plug it into the USB port at the back of the E9. I also have a powered USB hub - will this work to provide power/amplification for a USB headset? This, from Wikipedia makes me3 thing it might work.

Computer headsets generally come in two connecting types, standard 3.5 mm & USB connection. General 3.5 mm computer headset comes with two 3.5 mm connectors, one connecting to microphone jack (line-in) and one connecting to speaker jack (line-out) of the computer. 3.5 mm Computer Headsets connect to the computer via a soundcard, which converts the digital signal of the computer to analog signal for the headset. USB computer headset connects to the computer via USB ports, and the audio conversion occurs in the headset or in the control unit of the headset.

A USB headset would work plugged straight into your computer and possibly through a hub (some devices don't work well or at all through hubs, i don't know the details, though).

I've never disabled sound devices through the BIOS before, so i'm not positive, but the USB headset should show up as it's own sound device, just like i assume your Fiio does.

In any case, you can't plug into your Fiio's USB, because you wouldn't be able to plug the Fiio into the computer any more :)

But yeah, the simplest thing (and probably the cheapest) would be to get one that looks something like this (two analog plugs) which you can just plug into the back of your Fiio.
