Get more out of my headphones?

Right now I have my old dingy iPhone 3G, and Panasonic RP DJS400 headphone set, and they're very important to me. I feel naked without them (my headphones mainly) and my family and friends notice instantly when I get a new pair of headphones/when I am not wearing them. So it's only natural I want to get the most out of such an important item to me.

Anyway, I got an iPhone 3G, and currently, Panasonic RP DJS400 (got it for the bass mostly and mid. It isnt built like a tank. Only been 2 months, already had to get em replaced cause the headpiece snapped. The drivers are unphasable though xD), and they're great! But just like the Sony Giiq I had before my Panasonics, I feel like the DJS400 set is starting to get a tad boring (the bass is still great, but I'm getting used to the mid), and I cant be running through headphones every few months as I'm not rich or anything, so I'm looking for ways to get more out of my headphones.

I've tried playing with the EQ on my iPhone, and really, since i listen to ALL kinds of music, flat works best.

I've thought about getting a headphone amplifier, and it seems okay so far, but I'm not really one hundred percent sure what a headphone amplifier would do besides gives the headphones more power; but I dont really know how my iPhone 3G, or headphones would demand more than the one watt maximum power it already demands. Will this really help the sound out a lot?

I've also thought of replacing the drivers in my headphones, but I dont know where to buy just raw drivers on their own for startes, plus I dont wanna tear into my DJS400s, so I might have to buy a "toy" pair to screw around with...

Any other ideas that worked for you guys?

Thought about a second pair of headphones? That's the most popular alternative

Dude I'm broke. :( Part-time minimum wage only gets worse with union dues. And cellphone bill...

Yeah; I'm broke.

Yeh don't worry about a headphone amplifier all too much yet ~ it's basic function is two fold, one it will amplify

the signal to give you a louder volume but it will also control the driver more precisely allowing it to reproduce

 your music more accurately.

Highly recommend you check the second hand forum on here, there's always a bargain going

and remember ~ in this hobby, it's better to go without for awhile, save and get something decent

then to lash out with the little cash you've got now. Good sounding things come to those with patience!

Good point. Could I get a little bit more info on portable amplifiers please? (A write up or just details??) I'm really interested in these for... some reason? (Probably becaue they can be used with any headphones I ever get and are useful)

And true, I thought I had really good headphones with the Sony Giiqs that were 59.99 (or 40.00 now :( FML ), but then I moved up to 72 $ DJS 400, and admittedly, the treble isnt better, nor is the build quality of the plastic itself, but OMG the bass and mid are so much better :) Was just wanting to see if there were any iPhone apps or amplifier-like things or whatever that could help out a bit.

Exactly, everyone starts from somewhere and it's just about reaching your personal enjoyment, I have some friends

in this hobby who are constantly buying selling gear worth thousands and I wonder if it's even about the music anymore

with them ~ they love the gear more smile.gif

Portable amps are great but remember that for any given unit of performance they will cost a lot more than a full

sized desktop equivalent, this is because everything has to be scaled down, this costs money ~ but let's say

you decide one day to get a high end Sennheiser, Beyer Dynamic or AKG - The portable amp is going to be lacking,

it won't have the juice to drive it properly.

Most guys on here are either strictly portable guys and use low impedance headphones exclusively or they have

a portable setup and a home setup.

Play around with the equalizer on the iPhone and see how you can change the response of your current

headphones without them distorting :- here's an app too

Mm yeah, I get what you mean; yeah, it's all about the quality of sound to me, and comfortableness. Theres a 9/10 chance I wont be buying high-end headphones that are over 900 bucks and the set required to run them weight 42 pounds for one simple reason; I carry my headphones everywhere. They HAVE to be durable, comfortable, and I am a more active highschooler than your normal guy (agility training now and Basic Military Qualification next year), so even a portable amp really is as much as I'd go in restriction to size and weight.

Also, I probably wont be buying an extremely expensive set because of that same reason; a big reason I bought the Giiqs for were that I could make a 360 pretzel out of the headband and it'd come back perfectly fine. If I broke a 400+ dollar pair of phones, I'd be one unhappy dude for the rest of the week atleast.

And, i'd get that it costs money to downsize amps, but again, I just want to get the most out of light, comfortable, durable headphones that I wont feel super down if I'd have to replace them because of the price. I have indeed seen pretty cheap 30-60 buck portable amps (the fiio or something like that?). The quality of them; I have no clue as I just saw them in the second hand section while scrolling, but hey, it is a portable amp. Is there any beginner portable amp out there that you'd reccomend or a cheap amp that'd suit my needs?

And thanks for the app, will definetely save that for when I go out and buy my iTunes card (cause god knows I get all my music off of CD, live recording, or just plain Youtube. Which turns out well sometimes and crap other times).

Recommend Fiio as a starting point for portable amps, they make very reasonable affordable products - beyond reasonable when you consider the price.
