two headphones or one?

I'm deciding if I should get one headphone or two. I can't seem to decide. I want something for movies and single player gaming and I hear good things about the Beyer DT770 but I hear these aren't that great for competitive gaming. So I'm thinking of getting the Sennheiser HD598 or the PC360 with the mic. Which one of these are generally better? The Sennheiser HD598 is going for $175 at Amazon and I think it's a great deal. The PC360 is also on sale for $170 and they seem to sit around this price range. Also I'm debating whether to get the Beyer DT770 Pro 80ohm or the 250ohm. The 80 ohm is a little more expensive though but I hear mixed reviews on the bass. Someone says it's tight and controlled and some say it's muddy and boomy. I'm going to be using the Tritton AX 720 amp to power these. I've check around and I hear others reporting that the AX 720 is fine for the 250 ohm.

I can use one headphone which cost around $329 at Amazon the Ultrasone Pro 900. I hear they got amazing bass but I'm just not sure how it will fare for competitive gaming. There's also the Ultrasone HFI-780S going for $157 but I'm not sure how they are.

So its either the HD598 or PC360 for competitive gaming and the Beyer DT770, 80ohm or 250ohm?

or I can just get the Ultrasone Pro 900 and be done with it. I haven't read much reviews on it yet though which I'll do after this post. I'm just in a hurry because I'm not sure how long the prices on Amazon will stay like that. I'm from Canada but I'm heading to Buffalo so I'm going to pick up the headphones when I'm there.

I vote for two. I love the Pro 900 for certain instances, but I don't feel they're good enough all-arounders to be your only headphone. With two headphones, you'd be able to suit a wider variety of needs.

These two would be good and within your budget

Audio technica AD700 = great for gaming, locating enemies in space.

Beyer DT770 80 ohm = bass heaviest compared to 250ohm, easier to power properly than the 250ohm

I've heard a lot of good things about the AD700 but I don't think I can use that. I heard the headphone is huge and I don't want to take the chance that it won't fit me.

So I'm going to buy two headphones then.

It comes down to these then the PC360 or HD598? The mic on the PC360 will be useful but I'm just curious how better the HD598 is compared to the PC360.

I can always get the ModMic by AntLion. Cost $33 bucks though but I think it's worth it.

I'm still weary about the DT770 Pro 80 ohm. I have the Sony XB500 and I find that there is way too much bass and muffles the mids and highs. I've also had the HD558 and those were amazingly clear. Unfortunately  I returned those because they just didn't have enough bass for me.

The Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 80-Ohm needs a good headphone amplifier to sound it's best, sounds "muddy" unamped.

The DT-770 Pro 250-Ohm has more clarity, it's my favorite, has to have a good headphone amplifier.

The Sennheiser HD-598 has better sound then the PC360, but the PC360 is a better value with the built in mic.

Both the HD-598 and PC360 are 50-Ohm, easier to drive then the DT-770 series.

The Bass on the HD-558 can be improved by removing the black rubber tape from the grill on the inside of the cans.

Personally, I like the bass on the HD-558s.

If your willing to spend the money, just get the HD-598 and a "boom" mic mounted on your desk.

open headphones are usually better for gaming, less fatigue on the ears for long term gaming.

For an old guy like me (47yo) closed headphone can fatigue the ears.

Rather than buying 2 okay phones buy 1 great all-rounder like a Beyerdynamic DT880 or Sennheiser HD600 and spend the extra on an amp; of which you can upgrade at a later date for an additional bump in SQ.

Some mixed opinions in here. Can't really decide really. I don't think the DT880 will suit me though. Maybe the DT990 since it got really good bass for an open headphone. But I'll have to pick up a FiiO E9 or something similar to power them. I'm still thinking two headphones will be the way to go. If I feel that one of them is not right for me I can always sell it.

i think op has a hidden problem here. you might want 1 or 2 headphones...hmmmmm... so if i add 1+2=3 that means answer to your question is in reality you want 3 pairs of headphones. i think the myth has been busted.
