Need some help/suggestions for buying new headphones

Alright, to start, I previously owned the HD485s (which I loved) but unfortunately the headband recently snapped and they're no longer manufactured anyway so I'm in desperate need of some new phones. I'd mainly be using them for portable use into an iPod Classic (unamped) so they need to have relatively low impedance so they can be adequately powered in that situation. I'm also looking to stay within the $150 and under price range.

I mainly listen to rock/metal so I'm not really into the "Beats-esque" extreme low-end emphasis but I do require a bit of bass pronunciation and impact so as to avoid sounding empty. A couple headphones I've looked at/considered:

Audio Technica ATH M-50 - I've heard great things about these phones but others have called them overrated so I'm not entirely sure what to think about them.

V-Moda Crossfade LPs - I was initially sold on these but I've heard that while the bass response is impressive the mids and highs are significantly recessed so I don't think I'll be getting these.

So I really need some help being pointed in the right direction. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Heya,

The Crossfade LP's are awful in my opinion. Bass isnt' that great, the sound is harsh and tinny sounding, like too much of a spike in the high treble. Overall, terrible for rock/metal in my book. But hey, that's just my ears. I thought it and the M50 sounded very similar, frankly. So take that as you will. I don't think either are very good headphones, certainly not for the premium prices they're going for these days.

My first reaction is to put you on a Grado SR60i with Lcush pads, if you can stand on-ear open air headphones. Or another option in the closed are, the Fischer Audio FA-011's. Another is the Sennheiser HD598.

Otherwise, I'd suggest some options like the Shure SRH440, Shure SRH840, Ultrasone HFI 780, Fischer Audio FA-003, Beyer DT770's, for closed options.

Very best,

Slightly above your price range, but the Sennheiser 25-1 ii are great for portable use, great bass impact, perfect for rock.

Save a few dollars, CALs (Creative Aurvana Live) great sound for the price.

Leaves enough left over for a Fiio E5 or E6 portable headphone amplifier, they are small.
