I'm so glad I stumbled on this thread.  What a delight.  I'm just starting to collect various types of phones and this now takes number one spot for canal phones.  The sound stage is so much larger and the sound is more realistic than any bud type phones I have used.  They sound a lot like my DT880's which is my best open headphone.  They are easy to drive and you can hear the color of each amp they are plugged in to.  I'm ordering more right away.  They are a good match for my Samsung HS3000 bluetooth receiver.

 

I should add that I was surprised they fit me so well.  I have no need for new tips.  The fat part is turned up and fits in the ear fold, it's a good tight fit and only slightly uncomfortable.  I can easily get used to the drawbacks (like noisy cord) while enjoying the great sound.  I use Bartok choir works to test them.  Most phones buckle under the harmony of a female choir singing at full volume.  These phones do an OK job.

 

So what canal phones outshine these Monoprice phones to the point I should get them?  At reasonable cost of course.  I would spend $100 for something even better than these.

I don't think there is a better IEM if we are talking price/performance, they are the bang for the buck king surely.

I needed some cables from Monoprice so I added 5 more 8320's to my order.  Some go to nephews's and a couple are for me to modify and experiment with.  I'm really impressed.

 

I'm reading most of the previous posts looking for mod's.  The silicone gel mold is very interesting.

 

These handle complex harmonies after a little break in, and they also have a good soundstage.

 

My thanks to Dsnuts for finding these little gems.

Lol. I do believe these MP8320 has hit somewhat of a cult status on these threads.. You guys enjoy them earphones. I truly hope one day we will see a new version.

I just ordered the JVC HA-FX101.  I will get them next week.  Just wondering what your thoughts were vs. the MP8320 (which I already have many pairs of).

It is nice to get a new sound. I know there is a "stigma" attached to bass earphones. The instant thought might be. They will be lacking or the bass so strong that it will overtake some mids. Overly warm sounds.

 

These FX101 has none of that. They will surprise you. Give them the 100hours workout and they will surprise even more.Great buy. Oh by the way if these end up being a good one for you. I can also highly recommend the FX40.. Astounding after burn in. Both are excellent.

I do like the warm sound of the 8320, thus why I took your suggestion on the FX101.  I did read a lot on the FX40 and how it is a different, cleaner sound than the FX101.  And that the FX40 needs a LOT of burn in.

 

The FX40 might be my next purchase.  But first, really want to get a portable DAC for my other headphones.  I need to stop buying little stuff and save up for the bigger purchases.  wink.gif

I have both. FX101 have tons of hard hitting bass. The best bass I have heard in an IEM yet. Punchy and tight. The mids are a bit reserved. The highs are bright and in your face. Too hot for me but some like that sound.

 

 The 8320 have some bass but not much. They have very good midrange and highs. Not hot, not bright, but nice and detailed.

 

 That's my take.

I’m not so sure you have a cult going Dsnuts, it’s just a good product for those of us that don’t mind trying the unconventional. I’m “out of my league” when it comes to headphones but I know the sound I like (and they fit my ears perfect). These 8320’s go well with my RCA Lyra (google) wireless DAC’s that I collected years ago for about $15 each. I have digital wireless all over the property at 900 MHz that gives about 2.5 the distance of the 2.4 GHz wireless one gets now. I pop them out of their case and choke up on the voltage regulator to run them off of four NiMH batteries. Very portable wireless that performs well from whatever computer I care to fire up. To me the sound is excellent on my Beyer 880’s, and now MP 8320’s.  I have a nice setup for being on a budget.  The next step is wireless toslink that I have not yet finished.
 
My real love are my speakers though. Nothing fancy here, probably low end nice, but there is something different. If you like DSP then try Ambiophonics. If that is new to you it would be worth a google. A quick explanation is that one uses DSP magic to create a soundstage that is close to real. Forget 5.1 and all those speakers. Two speakers can create an almost real soundstage when processed stereo is fed through them. What you are really trying to do is re-create the binaural image of headphones in open space. I love DSP!
 
I pump up the 8320’s around 156 Hz. I like it...
 
Anyway thanks for pointing out the new toys. I might become a head-fi nut yet.

Hmmm, think I might like my 8320s better then.  Still, I will burn the FX101 for a few days and give it a shot.  Worst case, I give it as a gift to my 14 year old bass-head nephew.  He will love them I am sure.

That's exactly what I did. You get used to the brightness until you listen to something else, then you realize how bright it is. Reminds me of titanium tweeters. SSSssss SSSssss.

 

Other thing is the 8320s are open meaning you can hear plenty of ambient noise. Not the 101's. So if you need isolation or quiet, consider that.

They loose that sharpness with a good burn in. They don't sound sharp to me anymore. Just right now. 100-150 hours at least. One of the guys had a burned in pair 200 hours plus and bought a new one for a family member. He ended up A/Bing both the new and the burned in one and mentioned just how much better his burned in pair sounded over the new one. Burn in works. Every single one of my new JVCs all benefits from burn in. Try it out. It will surprise you.

 

What works for me is. I use a 5 hour long Drum N Bass compilation. A cheap Drum n Bass Compilation can be bought at a walmart or your local CD shop. Just run that on a loop played 70-80% of full volume for a week. Try this and the true characteristics of all these earphones and headphones come out to play. I have too many headphones that benefited from this ritual I have them go though to not believe this doesn't work.. I know it is hotly debated topic. If burn in works or not but it is true. Look up Joker Review of the Gr07 as he mentions how 200 hours on the older GR07 does wonders for the sharp highs. The same can be said about these FX101s. They sound great. No sharpness on my pair at all. You just have to burn them in is all. And just casually listening to them for hours n hours don't do the job. The drivers have to be taxed in order for them to loosen up.
