I really hate the coiled cable on my Sony MDR-V6 headphones.

I bought some MDR-V6 phones with the coiled cable a few months ago. I frequently wear them when I walk to class and I just shove the coiled cable into my pocket where it bulges out like some kind of tumor. I thought I was going to be able to get used to it but I just can't.

What would be the best way to go about fixing this issue?
I am full derp when it comes to soldering and I'd be afraid to recable. Is there some kind of cheap recabling service I should know about? I'm not really interested in the fancy expensive cables, just something simple for every day use.

Also, has anyone ever tried uncoiling the cable? That seems like a simple, cheaper alternative. I know there is already a thread about it from but no one was very helpful.

I've been lurking for about a year and a half and this is my first post. I love this forum.smily_headphones1.gif

The Sony MDR-V6 have had a coiled cable for, it seems, decades - and some users like the compactness of a coiled cable over a straight cable. Who knows why. The only way to uncoil the coil is to replace the cable itself, and I don't know how to do this.

The MDR-7506 is very similar, albeit with a straight cable.

I just feel like the coiled cable is a lot more difficult to manage. Like I said, I use them for portable listening and a straight cable cable would be easily ziptied and put into my pocket or whatever. I just feel like it would be a lot more convienent. I looked at the 7506 but buying a new set of headphones isn't really in my budget right now.

Coiled cables are wonderful when it comes to desktop listening! My DT770s (straight) cable can get annoying because I have to stuff the excess cable behind my monitor. But I do agree that coiled cables can be very awkward when you're portable.

Seriously, just learn how to solder. It's not very hard. Go on youtube, grab something cheap to practice on and get to it!

I love coiled cables! They're not prone to tangles. But they can be a pain if you're going portable with them.

I can do some basic soldering, I'm just not very good at doing really precise things. I'm just unsure of how the insides of the phones look and how small the connectors are.

Also, I'm just clueless as to what kind of cable to get. The number of cable choices are really just overwhelming.
