A Reasonably Priced Sound Card?

I'm helping to build a budget computer, and am wondering if you guys have any recommendations for a budget sound card. This is an extremely low budget system; we only have $300 to use on parts. Recommendations for other parts are also appreciated, so if you folks would like to help, any input is much appreciated. It will be running most likely Kubuntu, if that information helps.

plus, it has an optical out, which is highly desireable.

 

watch for newegg combo deals (shell shocker alerts or black friday deals). 300$ will actually get you a nice system. Hard drives are pretty exspensive right now. I hope you already have one.

Anyone care to comment on the defective rate of the Asus soundcards?  I'm seeing a lot of complaints on the DX for instance!

Wow, higher problem rate then I would have expected, thanks.

Glade I started pushing the DG over the DX.
