AKG Q701 or Ultrasone Pro 900 Please Help!

Hey guys,

 

I will be buying a new set of headphones very soon and I have the opportunity to get either of these for around the same price. I definitely consider myself an audiophile and sound quality is everything. Whichever set I buy will be used with both a desktop amp and a portable amp. I almost never listen to Hip Hop or Rap so bass is not all that important. I listen to Rock, Blues, Instrumental, Classical, Jazz, etc... I would really appreciate your thoughts on which set you would buy and why. I would also love some input from people who have either owned or listened to these before. Please be as detailed as possible because I do not have a chance to listen to these in person before I buy them. This thread will play a large part in what I choose to buy. Thank you!

I haven't heard the Pro 900's, but I'm a new owner of the Q701s and I can tell you they are great for jazz and other instrumental music.

AKG K701/Q701 all the way, they're built for those genres in my opinion. The Pro-900 is a bass-lover and bass-heavy genres headphones, not good at all with real instruments.

 

May I also throw out a few more headphones for discussion/research:

 

Beyerdynamic DT880

sennheiser HD600

Sony SA5000

Welcome to the forums!  I didn't see that was your first post.

 

I'm pretty sure all those genres are the AKG's specialty...

So far so good.  I just got them yesterday.  Still waiting for my amp and dac to arrive, so I'm running them off my laptop's HP out.  Still very impressive IMO.  Will have to do more listening k701smile.gif

Thank you. I'm glad to be here. I had also considered the Beyerdynamic DT 880. How does the sound quality and build quality compare to the AKG's? I had looked at the Sennheisers as well but I won't be able to get them for the same price as the others. Sony's have been hit or miss with me. I have owned some that I loved and others that I absolutely hated. Because of the inconsistency I would like to stay away from them (of course this is just my personal experience, not to bash Sony or anyone else's headphones).

Yep I'm a newbie here lol. Most people seem to agree that the AKG's are great for any music that is...well..."musical". What amp are you going to be running with them?

I owned the DT880s briefly.  Its been years though since I heard them, so I can' really make a fair comparison.  The DT880 soundstage is smaller, and they may have a little more bass  (however I find the Q701 bass to be perfect for me).

I have a Fiio E9 and an E10 on the way.  E10 is the Dac -> E9 the amp.

Well I'm a DT880 fan so you'll get my biased opinion. I think the 880s are the better headphone because they do more genres well, the additional bass and speed is much more to my liking. The 701s are more of a chilled out phone, less impact, perhaps you could say more polite. Build quality I believe both to be around the same, some do however complain of the 701s headband, it digs into the head a bit.

The Q701 should be a good match. I got mine about 2 1/2 weeks ago and haven't found anything about them to complain about.  This coming from someone who had a few issues with the K702 and kept selling it.

If you can wait awhile, there is a good chance you might score a deal on the Q701 right around "Black Friday".

 

Always check Amazon Warehouse Deals. I got a pair like new for $244 and the box was not even open.

 

I liked the Q701 so much I even went and got a new DAC for it.

I think I would still prefer the Q701's since the most bass I need is a little bit of bass drum and bass guitar. Neither demanding.
