Headphone/Amp Problem Troubleshooting

I'm having trouble w/ my setup, where the low end is ultra distorted past the point where its preference. Something must be blown out or bad somewhere in my system and I need to figure out how.

I have a pair of AKG K701 and Hifiman EF2. They sounded great for a while then I stopped using both for a bit and when I used them something seemed very off. The bass was very distorted. I think I let them run a while and it got better but now it's back. Could it be that the tubes got bad? I know I could test both w/ a differnt set of amp and headphones but I don't have access to another set of either at the moment. What's the best way to troubleshoot my issue knowing that? Does a setup get bad from not being used?

Also, I live in Michigan, and when I first bought the phones online thety were delivered to my house and sat outside in sub-freezing weather for probably several hours. Could this have hurt something in them beyond repair?

Any advice would help. Thanks.

Try these things first:

1.)  Test the headphones with an iPod.  Surely if you do not have one a buddy will.  Do you hear the distortion?  If yes then be sure to turn off any EQ settings on the iPod and test again.

2.)  Test a series of other tracks that do not have distortion in them.  Perhaps your test tracks have this distortion in them?

3.)  Do you have any EQ settings on?

Report back with any progress.

Possibly ~ I know of a guy who lent his Alessandro MS Pro's to a friend who had a little bit too much to drink

and left them in a garden on a freezing night. They were never the same after that.

I used a pair of Beats I had laying around that I had forgot about. Distortion went away.

Put the 701's back in again and started messing w/ the EQ and found the pre-amp was set all the way up and throwing everything off. I turned it down to midrange and seemed to fix the problem. Not sure why this is the case but it's fixed.
