Need help picking a decent pair of over ear headphones.

Hi there everybody! :)

i'm pretty new when it comes to basically everything related to this subject XD. i have been looking at several similar posts but then i see everyone making several different suggestions. So i figured i would outline what i'm looking for and see what kind of suggestions i get. :)

so i suppose i will start with what i will be using them for.

1) For the most part i would be using them while at my desktop(it currently has the on-board sound, if need be i can purchase a decent sound card in a few months)

2) while at the desktop i usually will be at it for extended periods of time 6-12 hrs, playing games and listening to music

3) using it with an i-pod

uhhh the most important things for me therefore would just be great overall sound quality and comfort. i do not care for the looks and nor do i really care for isolation while at my comp(this would be where i use it most).  that and they must be circumaural headphones for i find those to be the most comfortable for me lol, do not like it when headphones are on top of my ears or in my ear drums. Also i currently do not use amps because i have absolutely no experience with them accept for a pair of skull candy's years ago that had like a bass amp built in with it?(they were comfy but did not sound particularly good to me) and i do not exactly wish to buy an amp anytime soon.

my budget is pretty much 250 CAD or less.

one of the pairs i came across were the AKG K 272 HD , but i still dunno about them lol.

thank you for your time and consideration!

So many options, are you sure you can't spend more? I would focus on the source man. Free Lossless Audio Codec files are pretty much standard in terms of awesome quality. And at least to me 320 kbps audio sounds close to FLAC, not quite as good though. I usually torrent my stuff, but CD's are another really good option, if produced correctly they have some of the best sound quality available.

To headphones, the Denon AH-D2000 gets some pretty damn good reviews, they're $289, which is pretty good. And if you every really want to upgrade you can get a markl mod, now known as the Lawton Audio Mod I think. Just look up Lawton Audio. And if you did that, you'd have some seriously killer phones, the D2000's themselves are more than capable though, just the option of the upgrade is great, because they will sound way better afterwards, I think it cost around $100.

If you're really serious and might save up for pretty much the last pair you'll ever need you could get some THUNDERPANTS! They're $550 and preform just about as well as some much beloved $1000 phones. Really amazing stuff man, I'm seriously looking into them. But with those you'll need an amp, which is an area I know little about.

Heya,

What kind of sound do you seek? Neutral? Bassy? Bass lite? Analytical? Musical?

For open-air, I'd say hands down go with a Fischer Audio FA-011 for the dollar. Otherwise, consider the DT880 PRO, DT990 PRO, a used HD600 or an HE-300.

For closed, check into maybe something like the Fischer Audio FA-003, AudioTechnica A900, used Denon D2000, Ultrasone PRO 750, Shure SRH840.

Very best,

There's a used pair of AH-D2000's in the For Sale section right now for a good price man, I'd seriously go with that, for that price you really can't go wrong, check it out man!

so all these suggested headphones are good without an amp? and i took a look at the D2000's with the wood mod and on the site they say like 450 dollars minimum XD. everyone on the forums seems to be saying for the FA-11 and also the DT 2000's you will need a good amp to power them. do i need to worry about this? seeing as how it will be you know going into my powerful comp? lol. so many questions to ask!!

Not sure what you're saying buddy, you want an amp/dac, this bypasses whatever sound card and amplification your computer has, usually offering better quality.

You don't need the wood one, it's the Lawton mod, which involves adding some dynamat in key places, it changes the resonace of the phones and produces a better product, or so we're told. Everyone seems to enjoy the mod though, that mod runs you $100 by the way.

Amp has more to do with actual volume, the dac has more to do with the quality of the sound

i'm lookin on denon's site and am having a rough time finding what you are talking about >,<. and nooo i don't rly want an amp lol.  nvm i found it under the lvl 1 mod's. i sent them an e-mail asking how much a new pair along with the mod would cost. it does however say the mod costs 189 dollars :S. actually looking at the price of the AH D2000's online they are now like 340 dollars? lol way out of my price range then sadly....

Lawton Audio buddy, just google it. Also a amp/dac is really standard in high performance headphones, all the serious people here have lots in the way of amp/dac, usually desktop though. Anyway if you want really good phones you made need an amp.
