Sennheiser HD 598 + Asus Essence STX impression

I got this new sound card today, and after been waiting for God knows how many hours...I installed the card, took a shower, sat comfortably on my chair and played some songs off my CDs. All I can say is, WOW, I can literally TASTE music!! Well, maybe not taste music, but at least it feels like the singer is right next to me!! I'm still using $10 sony earbuds whenever I commute, so that might be how I notice the huge difference. I by no means an audiophile, I can't tell the difference between good music and really good music. All I can tell is the music is sooo much lively than my cheap sony earbuds! I am very satisfy :)

on my friends HD595's I was similarly pleased. They have a nice sound stage and great clarity. My only beef is that they have extremely weak bass. It isnt even worth listening to things like Inception or electronic music because you'll only hear half of what you are supposed to. For people who like classical and some jazz, though, the 595's are great. I think the 598's are very similar, though i could be mistaken.

That's a nice little combo as a step up from cheap iem's.

You can improve the sound of your Essence STX for $15, you can get three LME49860NA op-amps to replace the op-amps in your Essence STX

By how much it can improve the sound and how exactly do you do it? The sound is already really good tho

Edit: Will replacing op-amps void the warranty of the card?

This is called "op-amp(operational amplifier) rolling", im not really familiar with the Essence STX so i cant comment, but on DIY amps like the cmoy, its as simple as taking the old opamp out of the 8 pin RIP socket and inserting the new one in. Most opamps by National Semiconductor/Texas instruments are compatible with this. Not all amps can be modified this way, as some opamps dont use the same socket system and some are soldered in so you'll have to melt the solder first.

I would assume replacing the op-amps on the Essence STX would void the warranty.

One of the reasons I bought my STX used.

Read the thread "The Xonar Essence STX, Q/A Tweaking, Impression Thread", it's 158 pages of info.
