I have been using my PCI Emu0404 for who knows how long now...unfortunately my current computer has no free PCI slots to fit the card. I have not kept up with any new soundcards for the past few years, so I now need a recommendation for a external soundcard/dac. The soundcard will be outputting to a analog preamplifier->amp->bookshelf speakers/subwoofer. I really liked the sound quality of the 0404, so I am looking for something as good as or better than that (as per your opinions).
It would also be nice if it had analog and optical inputs. A headphone out is not necessary since I have one on my preamp. I'm also not adverse to DIY options if there are some good ones out there.
I don't currently have a price limit, though i'm not looking for something super-extravagant - Let's say I have a 300$ ceiling. Any help would be appreciated!
