How to swap the cable on my DT770's myself

Thread Starter

I have a pair of beyer DT770 250 ohm that I want to modify.  I have a radio shack soldering kit with various tips, solder, etc.  However, I am not sure what kind of cable to buy, or how to go about cutting and resoldering the connections to achieve the best strength and sound quality.  I want a high quality cable that goes to both ear cups (as opposed to just the left one as it is now), and if I could make them detachable from the outside of the cups it would be even better.  Any suggestions?

go to the DIY forum. Theres a giant gallery of various types of cables. Also, a radioshack soldering kit is something to be REALLY careful with. Those irons suck hardcore. Believe me, I turned a 300 dollar project into a 500 dollar project because i bought a cheap soldering iron and didnt research flux, solder paste, etc.

Detachable and running to both cops, never seen that before.

Parts

2 male mono mini jacks

2 female mono mini jacks

1 male 1/8 stereo mini jack (3.5mm) or male stereo 1/4 (6.35mm)

Mogami 2 wire cable, W2944 or W2086

First drill a hole in the bottom of the cup that does not have a hole

You would have to install a female mini jack connector on the bottom of each cup.

Inside the cups you would have to solder two short wires (Mogami), from the female mini jacks to the where ever the wires are normal soldered to for the diaphragm.

Now figure out how long you want each cable to be, 3 feet, 6 feet, 10 feet or 15 feet, what ever length you want.

Then solder the 2 male mini jacks, one to each cable, then run the 2 cables to a male stereo mini jack (3.5mm) or male 1/4 (6.35mm) stereo jack, where you would solder all 4 wires.

I would as guess you would have some kind of sheath run from the Stereo connector to were the cable would split to each cup.

Hope this helps.
