Upgrade KOSS UR-40 under warranty or not?

I know that KOSS is not highly regarded around here so feel free to ignore this if you want.

On top of that I am not a really active poster around here.

Anyway, I have some UR-40s from KOSS that I like because the sound is decent and they are comfortable.  Sound leakage is a slight problem but that is about it.

They get used in an office environment listening to music (Rock, Jazz, Folk, and Metal) via a laptop (no headphone amp).

The reason that they are comfortable is that they have this netting that stretches from side to side and the netting is what sits on your head, not the phones themselves.  Well the netting has broken (second pair that this has happened to).

Anyway, I am close enough to Milwaukee to take them directly back.  Of course I can just exhange them for new UR-40s.

I can however get half there retail cost as a credit towards another model of KOSS.  I was thinking about the PRO3AA.

So I can get another pair of UR-40s for $0 extra or a pair of PRO3AAs for $40.

What would you do?  Feel free to recommend any sub-$100 KOSS headphones.

Since I only get the credit at KOSS, advising me to get Grados, etc. might be where your heart is but doesn't help me much.

Thanks in advance.smily_headphones1.gif

Okay skip the pro3aa (heavy and hard to drive)

UR40 are well regarded here they use 60 ohm koss drivers that are nice.

Alternatives koss headphones to consider

UR55 or UR50

DJ100

portapro

First I heard anyone recommend the UR50 or UR55.

Any difference that you can advise me on between the two?

UR-50 is a closed version of the UR-55.

UR-55 sounds quite good for the price. It has a good amount of bass without sacrificing the mids. The sound clarity is about average. I'd say about a 6.5/10.

It's a fun headphone but the comfort isn't the best for some people. UR-55 is semi-open.

DJ100 is my favorite headphone ever, but requires burn-in and an amp if you don't use a higher powered device. Should sound fine from say a Cowon S9, Zune HD or Ipod Touch.

I even prefer it to the PRo4AAT, 3AA and MV1.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I am interested in the DJ100 (I think that they are shown as PRODJ100 on the KOSS website).

Would a laptop be any different for driving them as opposed to an iPod Touch/iPhone?

It would be an extra $60 for them (chicken feed to some of you here) so I want to make sure that I get a proper set of phones for how I listen.

Thanks again, the responses have been very helpful.

Just as a follow up, I got the DJ100PRO phones.

I think that I will like them, they seem comfortable so far and the sound is nice right out of the box.  I think that it still has time to improve a little as they wear-in and I get used to them.

For anyone that lives in the Milwaukee area, KOSS is having a "Rummage Sale" at the plant on December 16, 2011.  Everything will be 25% off and some discontinued items will be available too.

Thanks again to those who replied to my original query. I know you guys must get tired of the "What should I buy...." posts.  I didn't use the stickied thread because my request was different in that it was for KOSS only since it was a warranty thing.
