Setup Help for Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80s with Receiver and Laptop/iPod

Hey guys,

I just picked up a pair of DT770 Pro 80s, and I'm looking into options for headphone amps, as I've read they benefit greatly from having one. Here's what I'm looking to use them with: I have a laptop that has a Creative SB0950 soundcard (http://amzn.to/rqzbRj) that I use to listen to my digital library. I also have an Audio-Technica turntable (AT-LP120) hooked up to a Yamaha RX-V367 receiver (http://bit.ly/9u7CrV) to listen to vinyl records. The receiver has a 1/4" headphone out jack, but I believe it only covers up to 8 ohms, which is pretty low considering the DT770s need 80.

Would the FiiO E7+E9 (http://amzn.to/vuqCrj) combo be an adequate solution? It seems it would cover both the DAC+Amp needed for the laptop and the amplification needed for the receiver. If not, any other suggestions in that price range would be wonderful.

Thanks!

OR would waiting for the e17/e15 be a better option? I see there is also the e10 model for a desktop DAC/amp and the e11 for a purely portable amp. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices here. Any guidance would be appreciated.

8-Ohms is a rating for the speakers output, not the headphone jack.

Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 80-Ohm headphones do benefit from a nice headphone amplifier.

But the Yamaha receiver should have no problem powering 80-Ohm headphones.

(call it a semi-educated guess)

For the Creative sound card, run a Stereo mini jack (3.5mm) from the sound card to the RCA input on the Yamaha.

Set the creative control panel to "line out" or "speaker out".

That should work fine.

In the future, you could always spend a few hundred dollars on a nice tube headphone amplifier.

Ahh, I suppose I forgot to mention that the receiver is at a distance from the laptop that would make running a cable between the two pretty impractical. Right now, I use the creative wireless receiver hooked up to the yamaha in order to listen to MP3s through my speakers. Would the headphones not benefit from running the signal from the receiver through an additional amp like the e9?

There is also the matter of powering the headphones for use with the laptop, since routing the signal through my receiver is not really an option. Preferably, I would like to have an Amp/DAC combination like the e9/e7 that has a component that could be used with an iPod or similar device on the go, while still having a solid quality amp for at-home listening.

I would think the Yamaha receiver would work with up to at least 150-Ohm headphones (maybe 300-Ohm?).

The E9 can power up to 600-Ohms (nice).

The E9 might (should) have better components for the headphone over the Yamaha.

But the DT-770 Pros are only 80-Ohms, easy for both to work with.

And I'm assuming the more you daisy chain the signal (analog), you lose a little sound quality.

I use to have to go though moving my little Muse tube amp (and RCA cable) from Computer to cable box and then back.

So as I could use my 250-Ohm headphones.

Then I figured out I could plug the 250-Ohm headphones straight into my Onkyo TX-SR706B receiver.

Sound was fine and had less moving stuff around hassle.

Getting the headphone amp for using with the computer makes good sense.

That would for sure help.
