Hi, I'm a long time head-fier who's finally decided it's time for an upgrade. I have a fair amount of disposable income and 4 year old setup. My current setup is a Keces DA 151 16 bit > KICAS Caliente > HD650. The reason I've never upgraded is because I've always been extremely fond of the HD650. The industry has changed a lot in the past years and I haven't been keeping up so I think its time for a change.
I recently listened to my friends new setup, a 24 bit DIY dac > Rudistor RPX35 > HD800. It was very good on certain recordings but absolutely raped the majority of my music collection. At first I thought it was revealing flaws in my 320kbps mp3s so I tried some lossless flac files. At the end I realized the HD800 was simply to revealing for the recordings I like to listen to. They are simply not recorded well enough for a laser precise phone like the HD800 to not find their faults. It made most my songs sound thin and without body. In a way theres not enough soundstage inherently in the recording to fill the HD800's immense soundstage. I wouldn't call the music I listen to mainstream but I it's not high-fi either I've heard enough setups to know that these scenarios can occur.
So with that in mind the HD800 is probably off my list of potential upgrade phones. For me that basically leaves the LCD-2, HE-6, and T1. I'm not currently living in a place where I can sample any sort of high end head-fi equipment let alone top tier phones like these so it's really hard to make a decision. I have a fair amount of experience with Beyer phones. Enough to know I like the HD650 more than anything in the DT lineup up to the DT990. Audeze and Hifiman weren't even making phones the last time I sampled a phone so I have no experience with them either. I have enough experience with Grado to know I universally despise their lineup up to the RS2. I have some experience with Denon's and Audio Technica's but nothing on their very high end.
From the reviews I've read, the LCD-2 seems like the right choice. I really hope it won't have the same effect as the HD800 on my recordings though. Its odd to be purposefully looking for a not so revealing phone but it seems that is a necessity. I'm planning on purchasing a Burson 160 line amp or ampdac to drive my next phone.
So for reference:
- I absolutely adore the HD650 sound signature (very warm, I do consider it slow sometimes, I have never felt it was vieled in any way)
- My music ranges from slow to medium speed (70/80's pop/light rock, classical, soundtracks, all time favorite music is by Sarah Mclachlan which I guess is light rock)
- Looking for something less revealing than the HD800
- I'm looking for a high end music phone, not a reference phone (flat frequency reponse means nothing to me)
