the 702 and 770 are headphones that needs amplification to sound good.. even the 80 ohm dt770 would sound much better out of an amp..

The M50 is probably your best choice of the 5 headphones mentioned.

The DT770 (2nd choice) is also good for the kind of music you listen to, but I'd go with the M50 over the 770.

Not so much because of the amplification issue, but simply because the M50 is the better sounding

headphone of the two (with all else being equal).

From reading the reviews it seems the denon 2000s are the best...am I right?

I think the D2000 and K702 are both terrific headphones with different strengths and weaknesses;

in my view one is not intrinsically better than the other

However, for the kind of music you've mentioned, I'll say:

Yes.  D2000 is the best choice overall.

is it necessary to have an amp with the d2000s? If so, what is a cheap portable one?

OP, if you're using these headphones outside, get the M50s. The D2000s' build quality isn't as robust. The D2000s are simply not portable headphones.

If you absolutely want a portable amp, get an iPhone LOD and a cheap amp around $100-$150, which are a dime a dozen nowadays. For such easy-to-drive headphones, though, I personally don't think it's worth the trouble.

I really don't want an amp, it's just something more to worry about. I would mainly use the headphones traveling in car around the midwest for tennis tournaments, waiting for matches to start, and while studying....still think i should go with the m50s?

I vote you spend the extra and get the Denon AH-D2000.

It should offer the best sound and at 25-Ohms, very easy to drive off a portable music device.

I'm an Audio Technica fan, not trying to knock the M50s

You can get a portable headphone amplifier for $25, Fiio or CMoy.

which fiio were you talking about that would work for the Denon D200?

I've got to disagree - because the Denons' are simply not travel friendly phones.

The M50's aren't great in that respect either, but they're much better than the 2000's.

The 2000's are on the heavy side.

They're more delicate than the M50's.

The M50's fold; they're designed in part to be transported

The unusually shaped earcups on the Denons are very placement-specific.

And the Denons' fit is quite loose - very loose, actually.

The M50's don't clamp, but they do stay on.

The M50's will also sound fine without an amp (or

even better with a little Cmoy or Fiio),

Finally, this may all be moot anyway.

Because I've been looking and haven't seen the D2000's in stock anywhere.

Nor do dealers seem to have any idea when (or if) they'll ever be available again.

Yeah i was just looking for them and didn't see any at all. I currently have Klipsch S4 Image, they finally broke, will the M50s be an upgrade comparatively? also, how are the m50s compared to the beats solo hd and studios? My friend says the m50s are not better.

Ok Zazex, you win.

The difference between M50s and Beats is so large it's not even a valid comparison. How much experience with headphones does your friend have? Has he even heard the M50s before?

Seriously OP. Just get them. I doubt you'll regret your purchase. Asking questions at this point isn't going to help you much.

but the demon d2000 looks like it sounds a lot better from what ive seen

The D2000s are simply not all-purpose headphones. Their sonic quality may be intrinsically better than the M50s, but that's at the cost of convenience and portability. Besides, if you consider the noise of your surroundings and the D2000s' relatively poor isolation, plus the fact that they're just going to be plugged into an iPhone, there's not going to be much of a sonic difference.

Would you drive a Radical to work everyday? Probably not. A normal car like a Mercedes sedan is much more useful. Same deal here.

for sound quality i think the m50 is the worst listed.

but its also the best for portability.

the 770 needs and amp

the 701 needs an amp

and the d2000 has poor isolation and is very large
