after a few hours of research I have come down to 4 closed full size headphones:
m50
 Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro (80 ohm
Denon AH-D2000
and the open akg 702

I enjoy listening to hip-hop/rap/pop/classic rock/ and a little classical while I'm studying. Which would be best for my style? Also would I need a portable amp with these? I'm listening out of an ipod touch 3rd gen. Thanks

I only have experience with Beyer phones really, so if the DT 770 is anything like the DT 880, then go for that. They seem to be good all arounder phones, and the 770 has increased bass over the 880. My 2c, so don't take my answer as definite.

Alright thanks. I mostly listen to hip-hop/rap so I think the extra base may be good.

For hip-hop/rap/pop/classic rock, your best choices from those listed are the ATH-M50, DT 770, and D2000.

The D2000 are the all around best of those three.

But considering you're using an iPod 3rd gen, where the SQ is not the greatest, you'd do well to

go for the M50 or 770.  You'll have a better balanced system than with the D2000 which IMO are overkill

for that player.

Also - what kind of files are on there?  You'll want lossless or very high bitrate with any of those headphones.

And yep, you'll want an amp to get the most from them.

I'll make this easy. Ignore the K702s, the DT770s and the D2000s. They're not efficient or convenient enough.

Get the M50s and don't look back.

All the songs were bought from itunes if that answers the but rate question. What's so great about the m50s? And will I need a portable amp with them?

Who cares about bitrate? Just make sure it's higher than 128 kbps.

So, why the M50s?

  1. You can make them loud enough from your iPhone.
  2. They're relatively portable, so you can wear them outside. Well, they're not that small, but not huge either.
  3. They isolate sound well, so no one around you needs to hear your music (and you don't need to hear the people around you).

You will not need a portable amp. Really. You can get one later if you really want, and it'll sound slightly better, but it can be quite inconvenient at the best of times.

Good luck with your purchase.

I do. :)

Higher bitrate files sound better

(depending on the original source material...)

Yes. You'll be more than satisfied with how they sound.

Well, I think so too - otherwise I wouldn't have ripped all my CDs in lossless (hell, otherwise I wouldn't have any CDs). What I meant is, when you're playing lossy files through an iPhone, as long as they're relatively decent, you'd be hard pressed to tell a difference. Obviously out of a good DAC and amp, it's a different story.

what about the sennheiser hd 650? How are those compared to the m50s?

The m50s are great but the hd650s are in a different league imo. However, that is only with some serious amplification. The hd650s out of an iphone are absolutely crap but, if you decide to get a nice amp, the hd650s become great.

So if im not willing to spend more then $300 or the headphones and amp if needed, which pair would you choose for the music i listen too? mostly hip-hop/rap

Either the M50 or the DT770 should work well for that type of music. If you get the DT770, try and get the 80ohm version, the 250ohm version will sound soft unamped.

go for the m50...

the 702 and 770 are headphones that needs amplification to sound good.. even the 80 ohm dt770 would sound much better out of an amp..
