eq help please?

Hello everybody. I have the ath m50 headpones and i need a little help eq'ing them. I want to bring out the vocals a little more. I am using a rockboxed sansa fuze, so here is whats on the eq: 60hz, 200hz, 800hz, 4000hz, 12000hz
There is also a thing at the right hand side that says "Q" and has a 1.0 next to it. What is this? What frequencies should i boost to bring out the vocals? Also, what is "precut?" "Peak/shelf filter?" "Band gain?" Sorry that im such a newb. Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much.

"Q" is the "quality" or resonance factor of a filter, basically the ratio of the center frequency of the resonance and the bandwidth. If you decrease it, the filter will be less resonant, and affect a wider frequency range.

To improve the vocals, you probably want to boost frequencies around 500-3000 Hz. It is best to have a look at the various frequency response graphs of the M50 available, to get an idea of exactly what frequencies are recessed, and by how much.

"Precut" reduces the signal level (volume) to avoid clipping/distortion.

If you have peak/shelf filter and Q controls, I assume it is actually a parametric equalizer ? If yes, the filter types are:

  - peak: resonant peak or notch at the center frequency, no change at 0 and infinite (in practice, sample rate / 2) frequency

  - low shelf: changes the overall level below the filter frequency, so that it is the specified gain at 0 Hz, and does not change at infinite frequency

  - high shelf: the opposite of above

"Band gain" is the gain level by which the signal should be boosted/cut at the center frequency.

By the way, what is the exact problem with the vocals ? Are they too quiet in general, or have a "dull" sound, or both ?

Well, im not 100% sure because theyre not done burning in, but i think they sound good i just needthem louder. However, i am nowhere near being an audiophile, so take my opinion as a grain of sand.
