I'm wanting to sell my astro a50 headset and buy a good pair of Sennheiser headphones. I've heard demos of the 558, but there are no 439s around here. I'd be using them primarily for gaming (sound stage is important) and music. Will the 439s still destroy the a50?
I have both HD439 and HD558 at my disposal currently, and believe me, if you can dish out some extra money and portability is not an issue for you, GO FOR HD558. It's a day and night difference between the two in terms and sound and comfort. HD439 are comfortable, don't get me wrong. They are very light weight and velour pads are soft. But the ear cups are very small. I have a small head and small ears, these fit around my ears in a perfect fit. They hardly touch the scalp, so the headphone is hanging by ears and headband and not by the head. But the light weightedness makes up for it. HD558 are very big and the cushioning is way softer than HD439. The clamping force is higher initially but it gets loosened up by use. they don't at all touch my ear and way more comfortable in general than HD439.
The main part-> the sound.
HD558 absolutely decimate HD439, there's just no comparison. Sound stage, bass, mids, highs...HD558 shines everywhere. In terms of gaming, open back headphones are always better than closed back, so yeah, a50s will be no match to HD558. Just put a clip mic and you are good to go in gaming department!
