Deciding between Sennheiser HD439 vs Sennheiser HD558

Looking for a new senn for all around use.

 

I love the sennheiser sound though some say is too dark..

And I'm in the middle of getting another for use on my computer for games and for leisure music listening.

 

Help me fill out the pro and con's for each can! This is my very very very humble chart..

 

HD439

 

Pro:

-more portable (though it does not need to be but it's nice that it is..)

-economic

-closed (I prefer it be closed!)

 

Con:

-Soundstage

 

 

HD558

 

Pro:

-Sound

-Comfort

 

Con:

-a bit more expensive

-more open

Hi there!

 

I have the exact same decision to take.

 

Which headset did you end up buying? I need to buy one in the next few days.

 

I'm leaning more towards the 439 for it's convenience and price.

 

But if the 558 has a notable difference in the sound then I'd go for that one.

There are lots of good reviews about the 558.

 

What do you think?

They cannot be compared on terms of sound. The 555/558 absolutely destroys the 439 (much better soundstage, mids/highs, and overall balance.)

+1 the 439's are really lacking in sound stage. I think they are neutral, but underpowered.  they are really geared to portability.  I would recommend the 448's over the 439's.  (just my opinion)

558s are without a doubt way better for gaming/music.  But they are open and leak tons of sound.

Thanks a lot guys. I'm glad I registered to this forum now :)

 

How much sound does the 558 leak? I know @ztreb185 mentioned tons of sound but is it really that much?

 

Does it still cover full ear?

 

I guess that's the only thing holding me back now, though I'll probably go with the 558 anyway.

It does cover the full ear. 

 

My office mates (cube farm, we're all pretty close) don't seem to mind my open Sennheisers (555 modded, or 600s) - but if you are in a library, I might recommend something else.
