Best price on an HD800?

From and authorized dealer. I'm thinking I should wait for black friday, right?

Last I heard, Sennheiser is still enforcing a minimum price. A quick search turned up no variations.

Though Sennheiser raised the MSRP from $1,399 to $1,799 and is now "discounting" it to $1,499.

Amazing how accounting works, isn't it?

I'd look for a used pair.

Used is a great way to obtain these incredible headphones.  I see them turn up for about $900- $1100.

If I wanted to score a them, that's the way I'd go. You don't even have worry because people who would buy HD800s in the first place KNOW how to take care of them.

Until about a week ago an authorized dealer on Amazon was selling new at $1200.  But it looks like they raised it back up.  Sennheiser does seem to be strong-arming their dealers - as UE mentioned, they've actually raised their price since the release (as did Beyer with the T1 and Audeze with the LCD-2.)

Edit - now that i think about it I recall someone on Audiogon sells them new for $1100.  I doubt he's authorized though.

I sold my first pair for $**** here on head-fi.  I regret it so I bought another new pair at my price from my guy.

I'm still surprised the price on these holds so high especially with the ortho competition.

Is there actual competition? Do any cheaper headphones offer very similar resolution, sound, and build quality?

Definitely. The HD800 got left behind by a new range of headphones that came out a few months after its release.

The LCD-2 and Hifiman HE-6 easily beat it out, IMHO.

Supersonido in Spain have been knocking out the HD800 with about a 33% discount for ages now. Last price delivered (from memory) was just over 700 euros. As far as I know they are a big reputable set up - probably only deliver to the EEC though; since I cannot read Spanish I'm not sure whether they are an authorised dealership so warranty conditions will need to be checked.

There's an MOT with a classified here, for $1250 shipped. Not sure if they are an authorized dealer. I was hoping J&R would haggle down. Used sounds like an option.

HE-6 requires a monster amp to work - even mores than the HD800. I just got an HE-5LE and that one is way harder to drive than my HD800. The HE-6 is even tougher to get right.

and the LCD2 has such a radically different sound sig and soundstage compared to the HD800 that one can’t be considered a direct replacement or upgrade over the other (I happen to much prefer the HD800 to the LCD2)

I saw one go for $375 once, and almost cried because I didn't have enough money at the time to outbid that (eBay auction, with a terrible picture and an unclear title, but I PM'd the guy and confirmed that they were fully functioning HD800s).  I still feel sick just thinking about it...

For those of you who don't believe me (yes I know it says HD300, but the guy confirmed it was the headphones pictured, which are obviously HD800s)

So sad...

That's a crazy deal.
