Is there any place I could buy a stepped attentuator & have it installed on my Schiit Lyr ?

This is not a real big deal, but I'd like to be able to "dial in" the ideal volume for the various recordings I listen to by just setting the attentuator to a spot I've decided upon on a previous listening session. With several hundred CD/SACDs this could be a very nice feature to have. "Lets see I've decided to listen to this Mahler 3rd SACD on the Exton label. Here we go I've marked (number here) on the disc case." I know sound characteristics change as the tubes "age",but this marked setting gets me close more quickly then putting down the book I might be reading & jumping out of my listening chair a few times before reaching that "locked in" point where the sound of the recording has the correct balance. LIke I said , this is no big deal but it could be very nice. Thanks,Steve

It wouldn't be easy. Stepped attenuators tend to be larger than pots, so it might not fit in the case.

Also, most pots are soldered to the PCB (I don't know if the Lyr is like that), and a stepped attenuator would not match up with the traces and holes. It could be jumpered, assuming it would fit in the case.

A practical solution would be to bypass the pot and put a stepped attenuator in an external box that would sit between the source and the amp. You could also use a commercial passive preamp with a stepped attenuator.

This would work because the source (usually) goes directly from the RCA jacks to the pot. So bypassing the pot and adding an external stepped attenuator would be the same thing. Also, it could be reversed fairly easily to restore the amp.

Here´s a quote from the 6moons LYR review:

On the pot: "It uses an audio taper and we haven't had any real problem with Alps pots as far as tracking goes even when using the Lyr on high-efficiency Grados. We'd have to go to insanely priced pots and probably a bigger chassis to do better than the RK27. Stepped attenuators would be no bueno with the kind of gain we're running."

Yes, I'm officially a knucklehead,as I have read that review more than once myself. In retrospect(I do way too much like this,it seems), the volume pot does track pretty well, I am just being a little lazy sometimes. Thanks everyone.
