How to recable/mod Sennheiser MX880 if possible? (good IEM cable?)

Just got a pair of MX880s for a good price. They're burning in still but i like them more and more. They'll be being used as earphones for a phone mp3 player.

Found the volume control to be useless - the volumes on it never match except at full volume. No mic.

Is it out of the question to recable them minus the volume control? is it possible?

What i want to do is take the mic and its plastic housing from my phone's headset and fit it in line on the earphone cable, recabling the whole lot with a new cable and 3 way jack. The new cable must obviously sound good and be very robust. I want it to last.

Do companies make off the shelf cables to do such recabling? anyone recabled a pair of 880s?

the alternative is an adaptor and a clip mic which i'd rather avoid if possible

I think double helix does recables. Not quite sure if they can do the mic thing. Go check out their website.
