GOOD headphones with 3.5mm connector

Thread Starter

I've been looking for ages for headphones that has good reviews, comes with a 3.5mm plug, and looks okay. I settled for AKG 601 and thought they were perfect, but then I realized it doesn't have a 3.5mm plug and decided against buying them after all. I'm so lost so I can't but to ask from someone who knows a bit better. ^^;

I've been using Razer Carcharias so far, and it's been quite alright for me. I'm not much of an audiophile, although I'm highly disgusted by the quality drop when my Carcharias broke and I quickly grabbed Steelseries Siberia v2. And I'd like to point out that the Carcharias broke for the second time for the same reason, the cable stopped working just like that, otherwise I'd probably settle for the same thing.

I use my headphones for listening to music on my laptop, and sometimes playing around with FL Studio. Obviously my needs are limited as the connector requirement might tell, but I do care about the sound a lot. Good physical design is also somewhat important to me, doesn't have to be a piece of art but wearing bowling balls on my ears is just not a very attractive idea. Comfort is a contributor too, as I'm going to wear them through most of the day. This also means I'll prefer headphones that don't 'rest' on my ears, but rather go around them. (I don't know the terms) I'd prefer the quality of the bass, but it's not that important and I want an all around decent quality.

I've been looking at the Razer's soon upcoming Tiamat headset, but I'm not sure if it's as much of sound quality as sound advancity. (that's now a word)

I'd prefer something around 250-300€, but can consider anything between 200-400€ if there's something great there. Of course the cheaper the better, but I wouldn't trust anything below ~150€ to be that great of an upgrade.

Ever thought of using some 6.3 to 3.5 adaptors?

How about a cheap amp like the Fiio E9 to make your K601's

really sing?

They're designed to be powered by an amplifier ~ a laptop

out means you have not really heard them yet!

Do they work well? I mean I don't want to find out that my several hundred headphones start defecting because I'm not plugging it where it's supposed to. I mean of course it would drop the quality as opposed to an amp, but you know.

I'm not sure if the extra wire clutter and less desk space is worth what I need. :P And I'd like to be able to bring the headphones with me to places without as much hassle.

Audio Technica W1000X? Should be able to make the budget, especially

if you sell the K601's to raise a little extra money

My AKG K601's came with a 3.5mm gold connector in the box, here's a web pic with

the 3.5mm connector attached

Oh wait, I think I worded that wrong. XD I haven't actually bought the K601, I was going to until I realized the connector problem.

I'd like to know what does the adapter actually do to the sound quality, because my main fear is that the headphones can't give equal quality to good headphones that were designed for the 3.5 plug.

I can only find a price of 750€ for the W1000X lol, and I think the 400€ is the hard cap for what I'm willing to pay at most anyway. I have a bazillion hobbies and music is only one of them. :)

The good adapters will not hurt the sound quality. Don't buy one from a dollar store and you should be fine. That said, the Denon AH-D2000 as a 3.5mm plug and I'm pretty impressed with the sound on mine. They are also low impedance, so easier to drive without an amp.

Phew! smile.gif

Here's two friendlier AKG's  for you the K272 mkii or you can wait for the K550 - both are easy to drive without

an amp unlike the K601 that will disappoint you to no end. I ran my pair off a really nice Soundcard and they

sounded pretty harsh and thin sounding, hundreds of dollars later - now they sound good. The 3.5mm connector in the

box must be an AKG engineer inside joke because they need to run off the 1/4 plug with an amp.

Oh thank you, I'll look more into the K272. :)  K550 sounds really interesting, but I wouldn't want to wait very long with my Siberia lol. I'll want to hear a review or two too.

It doesn't have to be AKG though. :P But they do seem to have really nice options.

The 3.5mm plug is not your problem.  There's no loss in quality with an adapter.  Rather, the real concern is the socket in the laptop.  It's impossible to make the spring connections inside a 3.5mm socket last forever.  The metal fatigues and loses spring tension because they're so small.  At the same time, the actual electrical contact area on the plug almost becomes a point source. wink.gif  The plug is exposed and easy to keep clean, monitor for wear, etc., while the socket itself is impossible to do either.  Your concern over an adapter for the plug is mis-placed.

Oh really? :O I was so sure it was something about allowing the electricity to pass better or something and it would be impossible to get the same performance without it. Thank you, that kind of makes me reconsider the K601.

Sony MDR-Z1000 is my pick.  Comes with TWO cable lengths.
