Well I always have used iems in the past and lately only using customs. I love the look of akg and looking at the k272, k271 mk2, k601, and k701. My current iem I am using is the ue-11 pro. I am worried about the open phones not sealing. I am worried I will hear too much of my surroundings or not get the full sound with great bass I am used to. what would you guys suggest looking at? I am wanting a desktop amp/dac and maybe a tube amp for music while sitting at my desk.

K272 MkII is a good all rounder but if you're after big basshead amounts ~ maybe AKG is not for you.

K601 and K701 are very open and provide a very good surround soundstage for a headphone but they

will need a very good DAC / Amp to get the best out of them.

K272 MkII is probably a better bet with a small dac/amp like the Nuforce Icon HD or Little Dot 1+

with a HRT Streamer.

I am far from a basshead. At time now I feel the ue-11 are too heavy in bass. I find the es5 about perfect now, but I get in moods where I want less or more bass and I listen to what sounds right accordingly to what I am in the mood in.

Any reason why you're making the jump over from iems's to full sized cans apart from looks?

Wish I had the ears for iem's but I have not found one yet that I like to stick in my ear

I just have always wondered about the akg's. I dont like the couple of grados I have tried( lower end) and I would like to sit at my desk and have the room disappear into my headphones and audio gear. I also want to become knowledgeable about all sources of audio. And right now if I hear something that sounds amazing and gives me chills as a lo of music does I would love to hand them over to wife and say hear this.

Huge advantage with the AKG K-series in my mind is comfort, they rule supreme in this area

HD800 is also very unique in that sense but the K601/701/702/Q701 are just so light, they

disappear on your head. Unlike the Grado's which are very subjective, even then, not for massive

amounts of time.

Are you after extended treble or do you prefer your treble shelved?

I guess a little forward treble is fine. I want to hear and feel the base, have the vocals forward a bit but have great highs. I don't want shrill highs or sibilance. Guess it is hard to describe.

This is what has me concerned ~ the K701 and K601 will be a little extended and harsh on some recordings even with a very good amplifier which

they will need. 'Feeling the bass' is another issue ~ no full sized headphone can replicate that, only full sized speakers can.

I recommend auditioning before buying but it sounds like a HD650 or LCD-2 is more like your sort of headphone.

Have you considered the K-501?

I really do need to audition some cans but kinda hard in the Killeen Texas area. Hopefully there will be a meet soon and I can get my hands on some then.

Highly recommended before you start spending big coin $$$ ~ it's a big jump from IEM to full sized cans in working out what works for you,

you might be surprise yourself in what sound signature ends up rocking your world!

Nothing in the full size headphone area will seal like the IEMs, if you're concerned about a perfect seal, I don't think you should consider AKGs. If you don't care that much...  I'd rule out the K701s, you would:

-Look silly (but then again, that happens with all AKGs in public...)

-Not get any seal

-Not be fulfilled when it comes to bass when you're in the mood.

IDK about all others cause I haven't heard them.

Word of warning. For me the K601 felt like my head was being flattened and the blood circulation to my ears cut off, not to mention being able to hear/feel my heartbeat due to the phones pressing on some artery or another. And the strange feeling that comes with the Kx0x series of having huge, deep, semi-rigid bowls around your ears, just doesn't sit right with me.

From me, the K601 gets 4/10 for comfort, but of course that's just my opinion.

The K701's "bumps" also make it one of the more uncomfortable headphones I have used... and the includes the LCD-2 R1
