90's mostly when I could afford it. My first system system was a NAD integrated amp, Spica speakers and Rega turntable. Then got into Apogee ribbon speakers, Krell amp, VTL preamp, VPI turntable with ET2 arm, moving coil cartridge, Cardas ICs, etc...

You have to read the history. Solid state did not become fashionable in audio and started displacing vacuum tubes until the early 70's. Even then audiophiles were not convinced. And just like the arrival of CDs, the vinyl spinners were not convinced. Even today a very well setup turntable system will sound very nice compared to digital.

I'd definitely agree that it's more of an "Ignorance is bliss" thing.

At first, I just got by on cheap speakers, headphones, and earbuds, then came the AD700, and then came a vintage Stax Lambda setup, and I'm still increasingly tempted to buy even better Stax setups (but mostly because I don't quite trust whoever rebuilt the drivers in this particular Lambda, otherwise I'd already have my end-game system). Not a good thing for a college student without much income...yet I have no buyer's remorse after hearing what electrostatics can do.

That said, few things are worth getting into deep debt into, and audio equipment certainly isn't one of those things. Can't afford it? Don't buy it until you can afford it, even if that means you have to sell some other stuff and save up over a few months.

This forum is certainly hazardous to those on limited budgets.  Fortunately, I'm still single and can afford to be a little reckless.  I look at it in terms of investing in my primary hobby, so it's far from a waste, and I'm not really sorry about my wallet - it'll recover.  :)  I'll still be able to enjoy my gear decades from now, most likely.

I've spent a few hours a day on average here for the last few months.  So far I've purchased:

E7

E9

E11

HD-600

HFI-780

RP HTF-600

SR-80i

XB-500

X7

I check Amazon frequently so I can jump on a price drop on the Pro 900s and SRH-940s when it comes, as they're my next most likely purchases.
