Help Needed for Wireless Multi-Room Music Setup

Hi guys! Need some advice on setting up a multi room wifi music setup for my new place. I've searched through threads but thought it would be best to ask the many gurus here for your tailored opinions.

My intended setup is as follows:

1) Living Room: A windows based PC setup running Vista connected via USB to an EE Minimax and amp to run speakers.  Music files are AppleLossless or FLAC and played via iTunes or Foobar. This setup will be connected to my living room TV screen to run movies as well as to serve as the overall server feeding music signals (if possible movies too) to other rooms in my house wirelessly.

2) Room #1 Main Bedroom: Digital signal via wifi to be fed into another DAC --> amp to run a set of small bookshelf speakers and headphones (most important :) !)

3) Room #2 and #3 Wife's Study and Kitchen: Digital signal via wifi to be fed into active small speakers, ceiling mounted and used purely for ambient music.

Parameters:

1) Will make sure there is a strong wifi signal throughout the house

2) Need to have a good aesthetically pleasing remote interface via 3 iPhones and an iPad interchangeably

3) Rooms #1: Digital music signals received via wifi in other rooms will need to be as high res as it was fed from my sitting room server

To save cost, music signals received in Rooms #2 and 3 can be "normal" res (if there is such a term).

4) Am open to changing my sitting room music server system to a Mac Mini if necessary.

Would you be able to help me with the following questions please:

1) Is it advisable to go with an Airport Express setup or a Squeezebox setup? What are the benefits of one over another?

2) Is there a resolution cap if I use an Airport Express setup? Is Airport Express limited to only Mac OS systems?

3) Am I able to run the same music to 2 or 3 rooms simultaneously?

4) Am I able to run independent music selections to multiple rooms simultaneously for multiple users?

5) Any other wireless music streaming hardware which can be recommended? Are there any which can stream video too?

Thanks again for reading this and your help. It's my first time doing such a setup so my knowledge on this subject is very limited and purely theoretical, gained only from reading up internet articles.

As far as I know, AE is limited to 16/48, the Squeeze Touch to 24/96.

In a multi room setup each streamer can select what audio to play. In fact it is more complex to have them all play the same audio perfect in sync.

The server needs to have sufficient capacity to maintain multiple streams.

Apple (of course) uses a proprietary protocol.

Squeeze does the same.

You might have a look at DLNA. This is an open streaming AV protocol supported by many big players. A PC running Win7 is already a fully DLNA compliant device.

Add a simple streaming client like Teac WAP for casual listening.

Ad a client by Linn, Cambridge, etc for higher quality or use a small laptop with an outboard DAC.

I'm using 2 Apple TV2s and a Airport Express.  Using a Macbook with external HD as a source.  One Apple TV is hooked up to the HT system in the family room.  The other is in a spare room hooked up to a small 2-channel system.  The AE is in the bedroom. Hooked up to a Tivoli.  All can be controlled with the iPad or iPhone. Very nice to have all your music, movies and photos availbe .

Hi Roseval and lextek! Thanks for your comments.

I think I will stick the the Airport Express for the kitchen and the study but the Squeezebox for my bedroom. Given that my family will not bother with my headphone setup, I think they will be pretty happy with what AirPlay can offer and controlling the whole setup via the Apple Remote while it will be only me who will have to be familiar with Logitech's iDevice remote. If Linn DS or the Cambridge streaming units offer a significant improvement in sound I might consider them but based on my current needs, i feel that their cost will lead to money spent on lots of unused input jacks.

Apple TV is a great (simple and cost efficient) idea. My son is 6 and at this stage is still not too concerned about the quality of streams.

Thanks again!

audio|acacia might be a good solution for you (www.plethra.com)

-plays to Apple AirPlay devices like the AppleTV and Airport Express'

-runs on windows, mac, or linux

-can access internet music sources

-plays to computers in sync

-can play different music to different rooms simultaneously

-can join all rooms together for "party mode"

-Can be controlled via iTunes-style desktop app

-iOS/Android app is in the works (as well as for the iPad)
