Mini HDMI as digital audio out?

hey guys, long time lurker with a few questions

Ive recently bought an experia arc - Im planning on buying a set of fischer audio fa-011's after the impressive reviews theyve got recently.

My question is, since my phone has a mini hdmi connector and hdmi is digital, can I use this as a digital audio out to feed into an amp like a Fiio E11 bypassing the inbuilt DAC?

No, the E11 is an amp only and only accepts an analog signal.  There is no product that I know of that can accept a digital output from a cell phone.  If you could bypass the internal DAC of any player you would also have to have a external DAC, not just an amp.

Thanks for that redface.gif

I did a little more research, this would have involved a hdmi splitter box with spdif out- at £55 this was more than I am willing to pay for digital out.

However my phone has recently recieved USB OTG functionalituy allowing usb devices to be run from the phone. Does anyone know if this would allow me to connect to a self powered DAC/AMP such as the fiio e7 or ibasso D0?

And if so, are either of these powerful enough to amp a set of fa-011's to their potential?

EDIT: further research has yieled that while the arc does now have usb otg functionality the software that is needed to route audio through the usb port is simply not there. This apparently has been adressed in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich which will allow the use of USB DAC's so long as they are powered.

Hello, this is my first post on this forum. It is completely possible to use an mini HDMI 4 jack as an digital audio out. I've been toying with the idea myself because I have a droid x that I would love to turn HiFi. While there are no headphone amplifiers on the market (that I know of) that currently accept hdmi as an input, I am going to try to make one (or maybe just a DAC with an analog stereo out). Hdmi uses simple PCM (pulse code modulation) for audio which is accepted by most all DAC ICs. First converting to spdif would be unnecessary. Do you think people would be interested in something like this?

If it could be used with a laptop's HDMI port too i'm pretty sure the answer would be: "YES. DO IT."
