~150USD Headphones

Thread Starter

Thanks to head-fi I had a pair of Shure SRH 750DJ's that finally died today (right ear cup literally broke off). So I decided I oughta come back here and ask if any respectable headphones have come out in the year or two I had the Shures. I primarily listen to electronica, from drum n bass to dubstep to trance and house. I have been looking at the ATH-M50S, simply cause I'd LIKE to try something different, though I wouldn't mind getting another pair of Shures.

Any recommendations?

Closed:AT M50

Open: HD558(w/ 598 mods)

Both have some bass emphasis and are a little forward (but hey, what you do expect at this price range.)

Pass on Shure 840s. They just don't sound right.

Panasonic HTF600's with Velour Pads. They're inexpensive, but don't let that fool you, they will pulse electronica through your body better than most $150~200 headphones.

Otherwise, I'd suggest you check out the Beyer DT770 PRO. I would not get the M50, it's so overhyped it's mind-numbing (no sound stage, harsh highs). The only good thing about the M50 is that it's built like a tank, but it sounds no better than the Panasonic listed above in my book, and I have a lot of headphones I've compared my M50's to--they're just not worth the $150 they run.

Very best,

Oh gawd, you would recommend those...

You guys are funny...regular_smile%20.gif

Honestly I'd take the M50 over the DT-770 Pro 80 any day. Despite the M50 being rather boring.

I prefer the SRH-840 to that by far, but can't deal with it's poor comfort.

You could get Purrin's favorite headphone, the DJ100. Under $50 from Electronics-Expo with Coupon code MROCTOBER, but it needs a cheap amp such as an E6.

Heya,

Do you two even listen to electronic music very much? Serious question.

Very best,

With your genre preference and budget, DT 770 Pro is a great headphone; HD 558 is good too(but less bass). I actually like both cans for electronic music(especially DT 770 for dubstep).

Why yes of course. Not a huge fan of bass heavy electronic music though. What I really love is ambient music. It's too addicting. Boards of Canada is really impressive on the Q701.

With electronic music I always felt mids were just as important as good bass. I guess I don't know what I'm talking about...

I certainly don't think the DT-770 Pro 80 is bad. I liked it a lot and it's extremely comfortable. But man is that some boomy bass. Hard to believe it's a studio headphone.

Soundstage on the DT-770 Pro is a lot better than that of the M50. I'd take the mids of the M50 over the DT-770 Pro 80 and sacrifice some bass.

BTW my next priority for electronic music (maybe I'm stupid here) is sound clarity and detail. Weird Huh? Seems to go against what everyone says.

Yes, but I prefer fast clean tight bass vs. "boom boom boom"

Yup. I'd take a properly powered Q701, even for bass heavy electronic music.

Heya,

Well there you go.

99% odds the OP wants what those of us that really like bass do. And not the 1% who will listen to dubstep on a K701 as their primary means of listening to electronic music (um, does this even exist?) k701smile.gif

But, clearly, to each their own.

Good luck OP.

Very best,

I'm actually really torn between that heavy rattling bass and a short clean kick bass like you'll find in house (ie: deadmau5). Dubstep as of late has really been few and far between, so focusing on Drum n Bass and House may help me out.

I'm still not sure of what dubstep is. It is something similar to D+B (drum and bass) of a decade ago?
