Simple Audio Roomplayer

Today I pre-ordered a Simple Audio Roomplayer 1. That is a streaming audio player with a 50W amp. I don't think I will use the amp, so I could have gone for the Roomplayer 2, but then again, it could come in handy. There was a demo of it in a shop nearby - I liked it, so I pre-ordered it. The system is not completely finished yet - there was talk of a separate remote that looks just like an iPod that might or might not materialize and some functions like "party mode" (music that follows you from one zone to the next, or the same music synced in multiple rooms) are forthcoming. Also Spotify seems to be a possibility. I do not yet use Spotify, plan to start with one unit, and use my iPad and iPhone as remotes - so it is nice to know at this point. There is also Windows and OSX software to control the unit(s). Resolution can be as high as 24/96. Most of the music on my Qnap is ripped from my CD's (so it will have a lower bitrate).

I had some questions I wanted answered - and the shop and importer didn't have all the answers. Yesterday the shop and importer suggested I should pre-order, and actually buy the Roomplayer if I liked the answers. So I did pre-order. My questions:

1) I wanted to know if gapless playback was possible. Yesterday there was no live recording, so I could not test it. Today the shop could test it ... Out of the box it seems that gapless playback is not standard. If you can alter this behavior is not clear at this point. So this is NOT the answer I like to hear. Or should I say, this is not the way I like to hear my music?

I asked this question because I read somewhere on the net not to assume a streaming player can do this. Up until now I concentrated more on how the music sounds, but this is, well - annoying to say the least. Does anyone know if all the streamers have this problem with live recordings that have multiple tracks?

2) I wanted to know if the Roomplayer has a limit for the music collection (in size, in number of tracks, or both). All I know at this point is that the music collection is scanned and presented in the nice GUI. It seems you can make more collections by adding users in the Simple Audio software and/or folders on the NAS. But the limits themselves are unspecified.

Most streamers do have limits - and I want to know them in advance. The Squeezbox seems to solve this with software on the NAS, but their solution consumes considerable resources on the NAS itself. (Some types of NAS are not recomended because of this - a faster CPU and more memory solve problems here, but my NAS is not the fastest one around).

3) I wanted to have a working unit on Christmas :-)  I might or might not have one then was the answer...

I'm also interested in the Roomplayer. If there is a problem with 'gapless', it would really be a shame. It seems a lot of streamers have this problem, but not all. The 'simple' SB does this without flaw...... Go figure. The only 'high-end' one I know that can play gapless is the Yamaha one, but this one is out of my pricerange.

Also I found it strange that there is no mention of the max samplerate. An e-mail from the manufacture told me that a 24/192 ability will be in a future software update. So that's good.

As far as limit is concerned, I read somewhere a number of 64000 tracks.

I also wanted mine before christmas, but that's not going to happen I'm afraid. In earlier texts you'll find that the original date was 'fall 2011'. Well, they didn't make that. Now they're talking about 'end january 2012'. Perhaps they will make that date. If I'm going to find a good alternative for my budget, I'm not going to wait around to find out

I understand that Roomplayers started shipping this week. Hopefully we will have some feedback from new owners soon.
