Fiio E9 Connectivity to Macbook Pro

Hi Everyone!

I just ordered the E9 from amazon.com, because it was a great deal, and I want to get my feet wet with desktop amps. I am considering the Sennheiser HD598's to pair with this. Anyway, I am a little confused with the amp/DAC connection issues.

I have a Macbook Pro which I will be playing all of my music off of. I understand that I can run from the line out with a 3.5 to the line in on the E9. Then I just plug in my headphones and enjoy. This option will use the internal sound card of the Macbook?

Where I am getting confused is the USB in. I can't run from my Macbook USB to the USB in on the E9 because there will be no DAC, is this correct? So in order to make this connection option work, and not use the internal sound card on the Macbook, I would need some sort of DAC, such as the E7. So if I get an E7, it can sit in the dock, look nice and pretty, but how would I connect my Macbook in this case? Would I run the USB from the Macbook to the USB in on the E9, and the dock connection takes care of the rest? Also, do I need to run any software for iTunes or the Macbook to recognize that audio is now going out through USB? (I'm totally new at all of this, sorry)

If anyone has pictures of their setup using just the E9 and a laptop, I would love to see it. Also, pictures of the wiring setup for an E9/E7 combo. I'm still deciding if I need to purchase the E7, considering that I have heard the internal sound cards in the Macbook Pro's are actually decent quality.

Thanks Everyone!

Another option would be using just a Fiio E10 by itself, no E9.  E10 is DAC/amp combo and is cheaper than the E7 and performs better.

Its not portable (has to be connected to your computer), but if your only using it with your macbook it would be fine.

I think the E9 is overkill for the HD598s, buy maybe someone else can chime in.

Reviews of the E10, that compare it with the E7:
