Sub woofer placement in a 2.1 set

Hi guys,

I'm just wondering about the placement of the sub woofer in a multi-channel set up.  I commonly see people position the sub woofer in the lower right corner near their right foot.  Is this the "optimal" location for it?

I just purchased the Swan M50W and am very impressed at its performance so now I actually do care about placing my sub woofer and its well being. :P

I have a Jerker desk from Ikea and it has a top shelf.  I have a 30" Dell display taking up pretty much the entire "far" end space of my desk with the two satellites besides it, so I can't put the sub on desk level.  I have 4 choices to position it: top left, top right, ground left, ground right.  Since the sub is such a pretty looking thing, I really don't want to place it on the ground on the carpet where dust and dirt can have at it. I would prefer to put it on the top shelf, but I'm afraid that isn't the correct location for a sub woofer.  I've never seen anyone placing the sub above their ear level.  I've read that the sub woofer is a direction-less device that shouldn't be place more than 3-4 feet away from its satellites.

Placing the sub on the top shelf or on the ground would yield roughly the same distance from my ear--about 3-4 feet diagonal from my head to its possible location points.  The only two differences really are it's above or below my ear level(obviously~) and the fact that my desk surface would block its sound somewhat if I place it on the ground.

Sorry if I make a big deal out of simply placing a sub lol.... I just want to know the optimal location for the sub to go. xD  Thanks in advance!

PS: Is it OK to put things on top of the sub?  Say... a gaming system such as a PS3.

Sub placement is more of an art than a science.

You are best advised to do it by a process of trial and error.Find the best placement by ear.

There are two methods. Either keep moving the sub around and going back to your ideal listening position or, better, place the sub where your head is normally and then move around until you find the place it sounds best,(or the difference is so small it makes no difference) then move the sub to that position.

The bass frequencies from a sub are non directional. What many do is place the sub on top of a piece of marble. It is also favorable to place a sub in a corner. I'm not sure of your sub settings you have access to but you need to be able to set your filter so that the bass waves mature in the room your in. If you have your settings wrong the bass will mature out side the walls of your room and you will really not hear it at all.

The settings seem more important at times than placement. The main goal is to not get rattles from anything near the sub. This is why putting them up on a shelf or near objects is not a good idea. Setting your sub volume is better as to low rather than to much drowning out the midrange in the music. It is a concept where less bass is really the best at times.
