WARNING: Install at your own risk!!! I am not to be held responsible for any malfunctioning of your device during this procedure!!

I've seen people lately wanting a more clearer explanation of the installation instructions for the RockBox firmare.

You can install Rockbox to your HiFiMAN player using a MAC based computer, but you cannot uninstall Rockbox unless you use BootCamp to emulate Windows!!!

Installing Rockbox

Tools needed to do this:
  1. A working computer ( MAC or Windows )
  2. A USB 2.0 cable
  3. An HM-801, 603, 602 or 601 player
  4. An SD Card

Download the Rockbox firmware for the HM-801 HERE and the HM-60X firmware HERE. Download the the file that only gets placed on the SD card for the HM-801 HERE and the HM-60X HERE.

Step 1: Unzip both folders and place the actual files somewhere you can easily access.
Step 2: Power on the HM-801, 603, 602 or 601 and connect it to your computer via the USB DATA EXC port.
Step 3: In Windows explorer or MAC explorer, if they're not any other SD cards, flash drives, portable HDD's, etc... connected you should only see 2 external storage devices. One storage device is your SD card and the other is the HM-801, 603, 602 or 601's internal 2, 8 or 16gb flash memory.
Step 4: Once you've found out which storage device is which, place the "HM-801.IMG" file directly into the HM-801's internal flash memory or the "HM-601.IMG" file directly into the HM-603, 602 or 601's internal flash memory ( NOT the SD card ).
Step 5: Place the ".rockbox" folder into the SD Card, in the FIRST directory, not inside any other folders.
Step 6: Disconnect the HM-801, 603, 602 or 601 player from the USB cable once all file transfers are completed and power down the unit.
Step 7: Power up the unit and wait as the HM-801, 603, 602 or 601 installs the firmware. ( DO NOT POWER OFF OR REMOVE THE BATTERY DURING THIS PROCEDURE!!! )
Step 8: Enjoy the new firmware!

Uninstalling Rockbox

Tools needed to do this:
  1. A working computer ( Windows ONLY! )
  2. A USB 2.0 cable
  3. An HM-801, 603, 602 or 601 player
  4. An SD Card

Download the image flashing software HERE. Download the latest HM-801 firmware HERE. Download the latest HM-601 firmware HERE. Download the latest HM-602 firmware HERE.

Step 1: After downloading the "image flashing software", unzip all of the contents into a folder you can easily access.
Step 2: Turn on your Hifiman device and connect it your computer via USB.
Step 3: On your Hifiman device's Rockbox menu, navigate to System - Debug(don't touch!) - View HW info.
Step 4: This is the most important step, installing the drivers. On your Windows based PC or emulated via MAC, click the START button. Where it says "search programs and files" at the bottom left, type in "devmgmt.msc". The device manager window should pop up. Make sure no other devices are connected to your computer via USB to avoid mix ups and complications. Locate "Other Devices - Unknown Device". Here's an example, but in this picture they're installing the driver for a "Base System Device". Right click "Unknown Device" and click "Update Driver Software". Then click "Browse my computer for driver software". When you downloaded the "image flashing software" it should have unzipped into these following folders and files ( Click here for a picture of what the files and folders should look like ). When the Driver installing wizard prompts you to locate the drivers, go to the folder where you've unzipped all of the contents from the "image flashing software". Within that folder, click "drivers". Now depending on the type of machine and Windows you're using, this procedure will be different for some people. Within the "drivers" folder, the "amd64" folder contains drivers for 64bit machines and the "x86" folder contains drivers for a 32 bit machine. Once you've found out what machine and Windows you're using, navigate to the appropriate folder and click "ok". Now click "next" and the wizard will begin installing the drivers. Once you've gotten a successfully completed message it's time to move on to the next step!
Step 5: Go back to the folder where you've extracted the "image flashing software's contents" to ( Click here for a picture of what the files and folders should look like ). Click "RK27Upgrade_Image.exe". In the program that you've just launched, click the "...." button alongside "Image??:" ( Click here for a picture of how it looks ). Now locate the firmware file for what Hifiman device you're trying to uninstall Rockbox from and click "open". Now click the "??(U)" button right above "Image??:" ( Click here for a picture of how it looks ). Please be patient as the software reverts your Hifiman device back to it's original firmware. When you see the "Data Exchange" screen on your Hifiman device, it's safe to unplug the USB cable and reboot your Hifiman device.
Step 6: If all went well, your Hifiman device should now boot the original firmware!

Any questions? Feel free to ask!

Hi Tronz,

thanks for the guide! Any chance you can post instructions for reverting to the original firmware in case something goes wrong?
