HD598 and STX for gaming

Thread Starter

I've spent a few hours reading over the forums here and think I have narrowed down what I want but would appreciate some feedback from those more aquainted with the tech than I.

I currently use a Logitech G35 for sound but think I can do better.

My priorities are:

Gaming (Mainly BF3 atm)

Movies

Music

I'm currently swayed towards getting an Asus Essence STX with HD598 though others seem to say maybe the AKG701 is better with that card for the sort of requirements I have.

Would be grateful if anyone can confirm I'm on the right path with the best options for what I am looking for.

I use the STX with 600 Beyers. The dolby headphone was excellent with BC2. BF3's positional audio isn't as good in my opinion - however the overall sound quality is much better.

Music
BF...

I also read that you need to replace something called opamps to improve the bass which is something I'd really want to really experience explosions etc.

Is this correct and are these easily obtained? Or am I better opting for a dif set of headphones as I haven't committed to anything yet.

Do you need to? That's up to you. Probably easier to EQ it. It is easy enough to do and you can find opamp sources here on Head-fi without problem. I wouldn't worry about it if your main concern is BF, it won't affect the explosion sounds enough to warrant the worry. BF sounds great as is with Dolby Heaphone.

If you want to tailor the character of your music a bit - that's a different story. I got my STX Topkit from Hiflight. He knows his stuff and can suggest which ones you should go with.

I have no experience with those phones so I can't speak to that question. I personally would buy phones for music and assume that any open/semi open set of quality cans will be fine for the purpose of BF.

When gaming with a Asus Xonar sound card, I've heard it's best to set the game audio to "Cinema Theater".

I use to think is was better to get the HD-558/HD-598 over the PC360, but it sounds like the mic on the PC360 is fairly decent and the PC360 has dropped a little in price.

The Essence STX comes with one LM4652 op-amp in the buffer slot and two 2114 op-amps in the two I/V slots.

The LM4652 op-amp was renamed the LME49720NA, and the cherry picks (better voltage range) of the LME49720NA are labeled LME49860NA.

You can get three LME49860NAs op-amps off eBay for $15.

I had looked at the pc360 as having the Integrated mic would by handy. But I've read that the sound quality is not as good as having an hd598 headphones.

If it actually is just as good or better with the stx then it'd be the ideal solution as it is also cheaper the 598's

Price's on new HD-598 seem to be dropping a little, even the used ones.

almost near the PC360 price.

Been reading up more on the topic and it's down to HD598 with a modmic vs pc360.

Would the modmic give equivalent soundpickup and quality to the integrated pc360 mic sufficiently to make it worthwhile using with the HD598 to enjoy the superior sound quality of those cans?

There is one buffer slot and two I/V slot replaceable op-amps (Operational Amplifier) on the Essence STX

It's $15 (on eBay) for three LME49860NA op-amps to replace the two 2114 I/V and one LM4652 buffer op-amps.

The LM4652 was renamed the LME49720NA, then the cherry picks (better voltage range) of the LME49730NAs are labeled LME49860NA.

I've never heard anyone say the PC360 is the equal in sound to the HD-598.

There are a few PC360 users that really like the mic on the PC360, the location makes it easy to talk into

and easy to move out of the way.
Prices on the HD-598 and PC360 should (hopefully) be dropping sometime from now until Christmas, how much, unknown.
