To my ears there is a very clear, audible difference between the LCD2 and LCD3.  I picked up the LCD3 at THE show in Newport last year, listened to it for 2 minutes w/ the CEntrance Dacport w/ spotify and instantly knew it was substantially better than the LCD2 and I wanted it.  Since then I have tried the two headphones w/ my iphone, Xm6, Schiit Lyr, Meier Concerto, or Schiit Mjolnir and in each instance I heard audible improvements immediately.  I do see the gap widening as I moved up in amps, where imo if one was buying an amp >500 I would consider buying the LCD3.  It was really the Lyr that drew the line for me where amps that were better than it really made the LCD3 "$1000" better than the LCD2.  For example I would much rather have the LCD3 w/ Mjolnir than LCD2 w/ WA22 or GSX and I would rather have the LCD2 w/ Mjolnir than the LCD3 w/ lyr.

^ Agreed (except for the LCD-3/Lyr combination...found that one pretty lacking).

Very best,

Very true statement. Take cables for instance. There are those who swear up and down they magically transformed their headphones and maybe to them they did. By laws of physics there does not appear to be verifiable reasons for the "better performance" yet people will pony up huge sums of money for something like cables. Well I am guilty as charged since pay $460 all in for a Toxic Cable Silver Widow. I also traded in my LCD2r2s back to HeadAmp to buy a pair of LCD3s. Ended up costing me a couple hundred to rent the cans for a couple months. I am pretty sure I will hear a substantial difference in the new cans though based all the reviews and PMs to several fellow HeadFi'ers who own them as well. On the other hand that is it for me as far as getting anything else hi-fi. I was originally going to get some self powered Audioengine desktop speakers and I have ended up spending 10 times more than what I would have spent for the speakers. Enough is enough.

LCD-2/LCD-3 related question.

I owned a pair of LCD-2.2s for a month and loved the signature but I just could not get comfortable in them for any extended period of time, even after flexing the headband.

Is their any significant COMFORT difference between the LCD-2 and LCD-3?

The softer earpads on the LCD-3s do make them more comfortable. Not huge, but still noticeable.

A fellow Head-Fi'r was kind enough to let me have an extended listen to his LCD3's at the LA Meet. They were paired with my 300B amp and a Gungnir.  I thought they were a very nice step up from my LCD2's

Someone like me would probably never do that because I think the lcd2 is literally the point of perfection. Any audible differences beyond that point are probably so minor that it's just a matter of preference on which is better.

I have my hd650s. I'm done. Lol this is endgame for me.
When some people prefer these over electrostats and higher end dynamics like the hd800 in a double blind, you hit the point of transparency.

The LCD3's were delightful.  With the improved ear pads I could wear them forever.  That said, that said... it was not a smack you in the face upgrade.  Smother, sonic clarity, very very nice increased musicality, groping for an analogy here....  but not jaw dropping from the 2's.

Do I want them? Hell yes.  Can I afford them?  Kinda, might take a month.  Can I rationalize them, very tough. Honestly, I think the damn ear pads might have the biggest listening impact.

The other route for me would be to keep the 2's and augment with HD-800's, which I have only listened to for a short time.  Both will cost more because I need a balanced interface.  But I would have apples and bananas and that sounds like fun.

Why don't you just buy some LCD-3 pads for your LCD-2?

Yo !

That would be a Tom Christensen "Damn Good 300B"  that I built.

It's an optical pollution

Those are the new "mini" LCD IEM's

I have a pair of LCD r2 and I'm able to get LCD3 earpads from a friend. Will the LCD3 pads fit on the LCD2? Same diameter?
