First thing I must say is I love the sound of my shures!I know the shure 940 doesnt need a amp to sound good but how much of a difference can an amp make and which amp works best with the 940?If someone that has experience the 940 with and without an amp could please reply, it would be appreciated.

I'm using a Fiio E9i with mine right now. It's not a night and day difference between just plugging them into an iPod touch 4g but it is a difference.

The biggest difference is in the bass. With the E9i there is more bass with better definition and the low bass really comes alive.

I also use the 940 with an XM5 amp from time to time also. While the XM5 is not quite as good as the E9i with them, it still makes the same difference in the bass.

My personal preference is that I won't listen to them without an amp because I know I am missing out without one.
