Open Headphones Recommendation in the $70-$150 range?

Sigh. I'm back here, again. I just can't stay away.

I currently own the closed Ultrasone PRO 550, and the in-ear Shure SE215. I love both of these.

But sometimes, I want to listen to something open. And apparently, I think I can afford the luxury of having different headphones for my every mood. The holidays are coming up, that's literally my only justification here.

In terms of open I currently own the Sennheiser PMX 90, which is decent (ish) but kind of week sounding and, while it's low end is punchy it doesn't have much strength or depth. The sound stage also isn't terribly impressive, considering they're open (and from what I gather, opens have better soundstage than closed).

I love the sound profiles on my Ultrasones and my Shures, they tend to be in the same "family" in terms of sound (if that makes any sense). I listen to rock, alternative, some pop, some R&B, classic rock, and then bits and pieces of almost everything else. I don't really want to spend more than $150 (I'd rather spend less), but I'll spend more than $70. Comfort is important, as that's one place where my PMX 90 really excels (I have them on now and barely notice them). I like a balanced overall sound, but still with some strong bass (which is the sound profile of my IEMs and my closed, in my opinion). And a good soundstage, as I feel like that and comfort are the two main advantages of open headphones.

Suggestions? I've looked into Grado and Sennheiser and Denon and Sony and Audio Technica, but particularly in this area there are just too many things for me to even get a base group of possibilities.

Many thanks for the help, I'm off to mourn my wallet now redface.gif

Grado SR60i for $79USD should make your rock collection very happy.

You'll have a nice 3-way collection of two phones and a good iem to suit your mood.

SR 60i suggestion in mind, I actually did throw together a list of options.

My options are:

-Audio Technica ATH AD500

-Audio Technica ATH AD700

-Grado SR 60i

-Grado SR 80i

-Ultrasone Zino

-Sennheiser HD 238

-Sennheiser HD 239

-Sennheiser HD 515

-Sennheiser HD 518

-Sennheiser HD 558

Thoughts?

Sounds like what you're looking for is the ATH-AD700?  They supposedly have a rather large and well-defined soundstage for its price.  However, they apparently do not have very strong bass at all...but the Grados apparently suffer from having a small soundstage and aren't comfortable for everyone (most seem to have trouble wearing them comfortably for extended periods of time).  Guess it depends on what sort of a tradeoff you want to make.

Now this is just the general consensus from what I've read, so please take what I say with a grain of salt.  I've only listened to the SR60is once, and that was for a short period of time at a rather noisy location...never listened to the AD700.

It's just my opinion but occasionally someone chimes in with the same view.

There's a big difference between a Grado SR60i/80i on flats and on L-cush bowls.

Put on a decent recording in FLAC and play through on L-cush and I reckon

any sub $250 closed can on the market has it's work cut out for itself

to compete for sound stage.
