Just want to make sure how to clean an amp

Hello, I just received my headphone (JVC rx700) and I noticed that with my amplificator (an old Nikko NR-719) it make a buzz sound (a constant high frequency sound) and it really pisses me off. Ok I know its all dirty in there and also the potentiometer are dirt too.

So can I use Isopropyl alcohol (from the drug store (pharmacy)) to clean my amp ? ( Do I need to wait before power it on after i cleaned it?)

I know it's not probably the best liquid to use but thats what I got for now

Thanks

EDIT: also is there places i shall not touch?

70% alcohol ...

Or do you have any guide I can watch?

I would start off with a can of compressed air first.

I'd be very careful cleaning the pot, i've read somewhere that the usual cleaning agents/oils might damage it even further. There was one that worked but i can't remember what it's called i'm sure someone around here knows what it is. Maybe have a search on the DIY section. And yeah for the rest use a can of compressed air and keep it straight up unless you want to give someone a freeze then it's all good biggrin.gif

First, 70% isopropyl is way too diluted for use in cleaning.  It may actually promote corrosion because the remaining 30% is often water.  You can find 90% alcohol for less than a buck a quart at Walmart, though, and it will do a good job.

I second the others about cleaning the pot.  Try to find something specifically used that purpose, nothing else.  Many volume pots have a conductive grease inside that contributes to the smoothness of the volume operation.  Use of alcohol as mentioned above will dissolve and remove that grease, perhaps leaving the pot in a worse condition than when you started.

Just hose it off in the driveway. biggrin.gif

Though I'd also try spraying the pot with a contact cleaner. You can find it at Radio Shack. If that doesn't work, it's relatively minor surgery to install a new one.

I find that compressed air doesn't always get off the caked-on dust inside. I get a cheap paintbrush at Home Depot for 50¢ and use scissors to cut down the bristles until they're stiff. That will remove the caked-on stuff which then can be blown out.
