W7 Default Setting: 24bit/96k or 44.1?

my DAC is the HRT MS2, supporting 24/96. I use foobar for my FLACs.

The default for the default format setting is 16/44.1 in windows 7. I was wondering if there is any problem in changing it to a higher setting, namely 24/96? What are the consequences of this setting?

I understand that if the FLAC isn't recorded at 24bit, there is no gain in quality by setting the windows output to 24 by default. Most of my music is at 44.1 but I do have a few select albums at 24/96. If I use 24/96 by default, will my 44.1 files get upsampled? If so, is this a good or bad thing?

Please advise.

Hi. Im using the 24/96 sampling and I havent seen any difference in 16/44.1 music. When it comes to sampling up music my answer is: no.

When u use 24/96 sampling, it eats more resources tho.

Set it to the highest bit depth that your DAC can handle (24 in this case), and set the sampling rate to whatever your files are. If the vast majority of your music is in 44.1 kHz, use that.

It probably won't cause problems if you set it to 96 kHz, but because 96 isn't a multiple of 44.1, there may be some distortion when playing 44.1 kHz files caused by rounding things out. Likewise with setting it at 44.1 and playing 96 kHz files, but if you have relatively few files at 96 kHz you won't run into it as often.

Different bit depths doesn't matter, any bits not in the original file will just fill out to 0.
