I'm new to this forum and just getting into the hobby. I have been doing a lot of research and would like to know if anyone has any suggestions as to what to purchase to up my game from a Fiio E7 to use with my ipod touch or iphone. If anyone has something they would like to sell, I'm in the market to buy.

The E7's DAC dosen't work with the Ipod touch, you'll need a special kind of DAC for that. Try upgrading the amp, maybe an E11 or a ZO2 or something.

It does work with my iPod touch, why do you say it doesn't? They would not have sold so many of these units if it didn't work with the iPods.

The amp on the E7 is what is working with the iPod.  In order to use the DAC portion of the E7 you must connect it through the USB.  There are only 2 portable DACs that I know of that work with idevices and those are the Cypher Labs Algorhythm Solo and the Forstex HP-P1.

Yup.

To use the DAC section of the E7 with an Ipod, you have to bypass the internal DAC section of the Ipod.

Connecting the E7 to your PC via USB bypasses your PC's onboard soundchip and amp.

With the Ipod+LOD, you're only using the E7's amp, and not the DAC.

The CLAS / HP-P1 + IPod combo should sound just as good as your E7 + PC via USB. Would love to try

the combo out but by just reasoning out how it works, I don't think it's worth $500.

I agree, the CLAS is very expensive.

Thank you guys for explaining this to me. I tried the Fiio E7 hooked up to the MacBook Pro with the USB and experienced the DAC on board the Fiio which was a slightly better sounding than the MacBook. What would you guys recommend to significantly improve the sound above what the Fiio is capable of? Which portable amp/DAC would you suggest?
