Do I need an amplifier for 64 Ohm headphones?

Thread Starter

I finally ordered my Ultrasone PRO 550's today and I really cannot wait to get them.

However, people on OCN have been telling me different things about whether or not I will need an amp or not to drive these headphones. I am a novice when it comes to headphones so I wouldn't know either. All I know is that the headphones have 64 Ohm impedance.

So would I need an amp to drive these? If so, would my current Fiio e5 do the trick? If not, are there any good headphone amps under $50 that I could use?

If I don't need an amp, I would prefer not to buy one to not waste money of course.

The headphones will be used 80% of the time with my Titanium HD sound card, and the other 20% of the time with my laptop or phone.

Heya,

No amp required. Your Titanium is more than sufficient. Amps are over prescribed when it comes to headphones.

Very best,

i've heard the 'over prescribed' sound before.

you get an amplifier to clear up the sound and it makes everything huge loud.

chances are, you raised the amperes when you needed volts

or

you raised the volts and needed amperes

but sometimes the headphones refuse to get clear until the dB level has significantly been raised.

and with that said..

reference level is 83dB

and happiness doesnt start until 75dB

reference means you can hear the very tiny things without needing to hold any mental thoughts or emotional energy.

instead of listening.. you are actually being spoken to.

perhaps it is better to say..

you cant officially listen until 75dB

and you cant officially be spoken to until 83dB

how clear is not the same as how detailed.

think about it..

some rooms IDLE at 60dB

bumping up to 75dB isnt necessarily a lot.

i've listened in the 78dB range with my floor speakers and the air still manages to get in the way a lot.

tried opening a window and exhausting the old air to get fresh air.. and tried warming the room up too.

for your information..

you are in reference when you know everything.

and that means all of the loud, as well as all of the softest.

Hey there. I will focus on the last part of your phrase. I am using D2Ks on the move (25 ohms) and whilst my iPhone 4 and Nokia N8 could drive them nicely, I noticed that at max volume on both phones certain frequencies were distorting. So, I bought an E11 in order to put the volume half way on the phones, boost the volume via the AMP and the distortions have disappeared.

As the others mentioned, the TiHD has an opamp sufficient enough to drive cans up to 330 ohms.
