Help a brother out

Hello Head-fi! I've been reading from some time now..and here I am with my first post !

I Decided to order me a decent headphone and I need few advices - guidence about it. I only have one shot on this. since I live in Turkey, I gotta order my headphone from faaaaar away and I dont have the chance of try-it-out.

What I need is a headphone I can hook-up almost everything and wont need an amp. For listening music in wide genres such as classic, old stuff like fleetwood mac, rock or shoegaze like deerhunter..as for electronic music, im not a basshead I mainly like The Field, DJShadow, Flying Lotus and some oldschool late 90's trance.

My first choice was audio technica m50's. Not becouse it has nearly none negative reviews, it wont need an additional amp and users from wide range like gamers or old ppl who likes to listen quiet music..you get the idea. BUT, theres a big question in my mind now since I read the audiophille reviews here on head-fi for ath M50's: mids are no good..

I clearly need a headphone which has good overall bass and highs, and WIDE range of mids with wide soundstage. I want bass and highs to be natural and as supposed to be, but mids must be at wide range with a natural - non polished sounding.

If someone read and clear out my concerns I would appreciate it. Have a good one.

So what you want is a headphone with a slightly emphasised bass and neutral for the rest of the frequencies ? An emphasised bass IMO sounds more natural if theres drums in the recording, since a lot of modern recording make the drums sound quite. What is your budget ?

Shure 840 is a good choice, it won't be a bass monster but you can't have it all.

@parall3l

Thank you for quick answer.

not quite exactly. I want overall sound not to be polished or synthetic. More natural mids and being able to hearing all the instruments decently. hearing vocal with all the guitars, and mid channel instruments balanced.

What I read from ATH-M50 reviews, stage range is not so big also its more for electronic music - bass headphone.

and budget is 150$

@Gwarmi

Thank you for advice. I will look into it.

Grado SR80i would be a good choice as an entry level open headphone, they sound very natural

to my ears, the mids in particular are stellar ~ they won't tolerate Schiity recordings though.

I recommend the bigger L-cush bowl pads as it expands the sound stage.

Drats, you live in Turkey ~ headphones are hard to come by from what I hear and importation

is a nightmare..

2nd, pretty much either SR60i or SR80i will do it for sounding good without an amp.

@Gwarmi

Yeah its shame there are NO decent headphones in this country and importing is PITA like you said.. I will make my descision better now under light of your advices.

Both of Grado's are looking nice and fits exactly for my sound needs, thanks NinjaSquirt.

UPDATE: now I will decide one of these headphones. Shure 840 seems hard to get, the one I found from ebay which shipping costs something like 50$ US. I will go with one of Grado's probably..

 I have first generation Ipod, philips gogear for flac playing, I use foobar with asio output in pc but onboard sound chip is no good; planning to upgrade it with a asus xonar card. Probably xonar DG.

If you guys have something to add about external dac or soundcard I appreciate hearing it.

A good soundcard is hard to beat ~ I used an Auzentech Bravura and ASUS Essence STX for a long time with very good results.

Cambridge Dacmagic was not a real step up and the Arcam rDAC barely pushed ahead in terms of sonic quality but I didn't

like the artificial bass bloom with the Arcam. Only now do I feel that the soundcards have been bested with my current setup.

Either of those cards offer good value for the sonic performance on offer.
