Portable mp3 players better than iphone 4?

Hi, i'm looking for a portable mp3 player that has better sound quality than the iphone 4. <$200. I'm thinking of the cowon s9/j3, zune hd. However, after reading some threads, it seems people still argues that iphone 4 sound quality is superior. Btw, not using an amp or anything. Just player and DBA-02/HD-25 II =] Thanks.

The iPhone 4 has very good output as it is - will be hard to find something "better" than it.

What the hell is the world coming to when a mobile/cell phone has better output than a dedicated DAP that is supposed to be designed for SQ. :( :P

Ipod classic's purpose today is really beyond me it seems. Probably it will be discontinued anytime soon.

I find the sound quality of the most recent one to be about on par with the iphone. Can't say that about the 2007 model. I honestly don't hear much differences between portable players sound quality and recommend whichever one you like the most vs worrying about what sounds best. I have 3 ipod touches, and ipod classic, and an iphone and i fail to hear many differences. The only thing i noticed is that on the iphone headphones can sound less harsh then on the classic. But keep in mind my classic is the 2007 model.

If the op absolutely wants, he can order something from Amazon, try it out, and then return it when he realizes that, like a lot of people that own the iPhone 4, that there are very few mp3 players that "sound better" than it. It's easy to get caught up with upgrade-itis, but the fact is, current gen iPods are pretty decent.

For the amount of money the op is willing to spend, he should invest in another pair of headphones. evil_smiley.gif

Purpose of the ipod classic is to have large storage space with decent quality of audio without all the excessive apps and touch screen. Its for people that only care about the music and not all the other crap.

But not with that horrid sound quality and a capped to death headphone amp outside of US.
