And just like that everything changed

Thread Starter

So I spent a while perusing the forums here, and finally bought a pair of the consumer (2005) 250 ohm DT 770's, a fiiO e11, and fiiO e10. Such an incredible difference, I spent hours re-listening to songs finding all the new qualities that I liked.

Then I daisy chained all my new equipment together, turned everything down, and started playing some Bach out of my laptop. What really happened though is I mistakenly turned everything up, so for about 15 seconds my headphones screeched and rattled until I pulled the plug. Now all I'm listening for is the mistakes in my music, praying I don't have to buy new, new headphones. Do you think that was long enough or powerful enough to have permantly damaged them?

Seems unlikely you could do permanent damage with a fiiO e11 into a 250ohm phone.

The FiiO e11 has "Maximum Output Power" spec of 35mW into 300ohm (high setting) and 13mW (low setting). So for 250 ohm this would be around 42mW (high setting) and 16mW (low setting) [ballpark figures].

I can't find specs on your particular phone, but all the 770's I see are spec'd at "Power handling capacity: 100 mW."

So at least on this technical score, you probably couldn't have driven enough power into the phone to smoke the coil.

(my analysis, corrections welcome)

If it sounds fine, it probably is.

Generally they crackle, hiss or just don't play at all when damaged.

I doubt they're damaged too

Highly doubt it, there are people who I've seen way worse mistakes and not do any damage to their high end headphones. They're made to last, generally.
